Acid reflux is fairly common in adults all around the world and is harmless in most cases and patients. It occurs when stomach acids are pushed into the esophagus which is called the food pipe of the body. It carries food and drinks from our mouth to the stomach.
When the stomach acids are pushed into the food pipe, it causes a burning sensation in your throat along with irritation. This can lead to sore or dry throat followed by dry cough. While occasional acid refluxes are normal, often bouts of acid reflux is worrisome and can indicate to a larger issue.
Acid reflux can leave a bitter taste in your mouth and can also cause heartburn which is painful to endure. When the stomach acids come in contact with your vocal cords, it can also cause inflammation and if gone untreated, it can cause hoarseness in the throat. These symptoms are often referred to as Laryngeal pharyngeal reflux.
It occurs more often when you’re lying or bending down since its easier for the food and acid to travel up the food pipe to your throat. If you’re suffering from sore throat induced by acid reflux, then it’s advisable ...
... to take sore throat medicine for the treatment along with medication for the acid reflux. Before treating the symptoms of acid reflux, it is important to understand how to prevent it from occurring regularly.
Sore throat induced by acid reflux can be prevented by small dietary and lifestyle changes in your food habits.
1. Avoid particular food items
People who suffer from frequent acid reflux should avoid spicy food, or dishes with garlic and raw onion. They should also stay away from too much citrus in their food along with peppermint. Carbonated drinks, alcohol and caffeine will all lead to worsening of acid reflux in the body.
2. Avoid eating heavy meals
Acid reflux usually occurs right after a meal and overeating can worsen the symptoms of it. If you suffer from frequent acid reflux, then consider eating smaller meals throughout the day instead of three heavy meals.
3. Eat at least two hours before going to bed
Lying down right after you eat makes it easier for the stomach acid to travel up your food pipe from your stomach. Which is why you should avoid napping right after meals in addition to finishing your meal at least two hours before dinner. This will make sure your food is digested before you sleep, thus avoiding any acid reflux.
4. Avoid sleeping straight
Sleeping straight on your back makes it easy for the gastric acid to travel to your throat thus leading to acid reflux. Studies show that raising or elevating the head of your bed to sleep on leads to fewer cases of acid reflux than sleeping straight.
If your sore throat is causing you a lot of discomfort, then cough medicines can also help you treat it. Just make sure you choose a trusted brand with the best cough medicine from the pharmacy. If you don’t have medicine at hand, you can also try gargling with warm water and salt before going to bed which will slowly provide some relief.
