Line numbering is used when, for example, the program code is displayed in the text, the lines can also be numbered when working together on a document, then it is much easier to focus on the line you need than to name the page number, paragraph number, etc.

Often a document is printed for further proofreading and editing. Then it makes sense to include line numbers. Each line of text will be numbered in the left margin of the sheet. The editor will be grateful to you, now it can fix the line numbers to which you should pay attention.

What numbering options can I use? Find on the ribbon Page Layout - Page Setup - Line Numbers. Here we will see everything that the program can do:

No - lines are not numbered
Continuous - all lines in a row are numbered from first to last
On each page - at the beginning of each new page, the numbering starts with one
Each section has a separate numbering for each of the sections
Deny in current paragraph - the paragraph in which the cursor is located will not be numbered. From the next paragraph, numbering will continue
Line numbering options. ...
... You can customize the numbering by selecting this menu item. A window will open the Page Setup, where you need to click Numbering.
Here we tick the Add line numbering box and in the following paragraphs set up: starting number, distance from text to numbers, number marking step. As shown in picture below:

Few people know about the existence of this tool, however, it has found its application in the circles of professional Microsoft Word users.
Insert headers and footers
Headers and footers are special labels at the top and bottom of the page. They can be very useful for document layout and carry a lot of supporting information.

What is usually indicated in headers and footers? Page numbers, author, title of book or chapter, etc.

To add headers and footers, find the Insert - Headers and Footers command block on the ribbon. Immediately you will see several ready-made lists. By opening them, you can choose from ready-made and designed headers and footers:
Header - options for various information with decoration in the top margins
Footer - the same but in the bottom margins
Page number - various options for page numbers
Click Change Header or Change Footer to make your own header.

The possibilities here are so wide and interesting that I plan to write a separate article about it. She definitely won't fit into the materials of this post. However, be sure to consider using headers and footers before printing.

Setting up Paragraphs
Look carefully at your paragraphs. Is there anything about them that you would like to fix? For instance:

Indentation
Text alignment
Line spacing
Spacing between paragraphs
Stroke and fill the background of some paragraphs
Tab sizes, etc.
If there is, you can customize and fix it. I already wrote about this whole, go on and read.

And if you didn't find any flaws, read it anyway. Maybe after that you will have ideas on how to make the paragraphs more harmonious and reader-friendly. For example, increase or decrease the density of the text to make it easier to read.

Setting Hyphenation;
Probably everyone was taught at school to transfer words by syllables. I am sure that most of you do not hyphenate when typing in Word. What is the consequence?

When you apply justification, the text appears to look great, strict and orderly. So I am going to try this in my document. Here it is:

And what if you see any line number is not aligned in the paragraph from start to end ? To align on both sides, the program stretched the text using the width of the space. It doesn't look very good. The spaces between words are too large, it is striking. What to do?

You can split the first word in line into two, i.e. make a transfer. Then the first half of it will rise to the previous line, and the second will remain there.

After applying that you can see, line looks better now! However, a large number of hyphens makes it difficult to read. Therefore, you need to look for a balance, where to put them, and where not. Consider the general appearance of your paragraphs.

So, are we going to add hyphenations manually? Of course not, it's Word. To insert a hyphenation - click on the ribbon Page Layout - Page Setup - Hyphenation as shown above picture.

The following options are available in the list that opens:

No - don't wrap lines
Auto - the program will automatically insert hyphenations where necessary. Perhaps 95% of users will choose this item
Manual - Word will offer you all the available transfer options, and you will make a choice
Hyphenation options. Select this item to configure additional settings. Here I would like to draw your attention to the item Maximum number of consecutive transfers. That is, you can specify how many lines in a row can be hyphenated. Very helpful so as not to overload the sheet. Experiment with this option. I usually bet no more than one in a row.
Again, hyphenation is a useful tool, but you need to use it with care.

Page Breaks
Word automatically starts a new page when the text reaches the border of the current page, but it is possible to forcefully start a new page, thus, for example, separating the title page from the main body of the material.

There are 3 types of page breaks in Word:

page, actually the beginning of a new page;
column, if the page is submitted in the form of columns, then this break, forcibly, you can start filling the next column, otherwise the next column will be filled after the first is completely filled;
text wrapping, creating text wrapping around objects on web pages, in most cases, such objects are represented by pictures.
As a rule, when a page break is meant exactly the first type of page break. Column breaks are rarely used, as are text styling with columns. You can set a page break from the Page Layout tab or from the Insert tab. In the first case, all types of page breaks are available, in the second only the first type of page breaks.

You can set a standard page break using the keyboard shortcut: Ctrl+Enter...
