Do you know millions of people take unpaid care of their loved ones day after day? Some even provide care to two or three family members which becomes extremely stressful. Actually, caregiving is itself an exremely tiring job that demands lot of sweat and time. A caregiver undergoes a multitude of feelings while caregiving like grief, anger, guilt, sense of fulfillment, and so on. Of all these, it is the sense of guilt that often goes unrecognized and led them to depression. This happens all the more when despite their efforts, the health of their loved ones does not improve at all.

Sometimes, caregiver guilt is also because they start to realize that they are ending up ignoring the needs of their dependents because of their caregiving responsibilities. Actually, it is the inability to strike a perfect balance between caregiving responsibilities So, if you are also a caregiver who has to juggle continuosly between taking care of eldely parents and raising kids, here are the top five ways to deal with caregiver guilt.

Acknowledge the feeling

This is absolutely essential to deal with the feeling of guilt because ...
... most of the times, caregivers refrain themselves from acknowledging this feeling bcause of shame. So, first of all acknoweldge that you have this guilt and then express it before a trusted friend or family member. Don’t overthink that what other person will think. It is essential to do so because this will make your caregiver guilt less threatening to your overall health. It is easy to deal with an emotion if you exactly know what it is. It is also good if you can get in touch with some other caregiver and share your journey because a caregiver might understand what you are going through in a better way than others.

Take a Break

Yes, you seriously need a break to introspect what went wrong! It may happen that you have all of a sudden stepped into the shoes of a caregiver without realizing how much time it may demand in the long run. So take a break and indulge in activities that you love. Use your break time to set your priorities and to have a better understanding of how you can manage your time for self-care along with your caregiving duties. Try to develop a fresh perspective to become happier and overcome your feeling of guilt.

Stop neglecting yourself

It is easy to neglect your own needs while taking care of a loved one, but is not always the best course of action. So, stop neglecting yourself and address your hidden feelings. Try to find answers of whether your are getting adequate sleep, time to have nutritious meals, and so on. If you don’t tak care of your own personal needs, chances are high that you will soon feel frustrated and this will have an affect on your caregiving abilities. Again, when you realize that you are not able to fulfill all your duties as desired or expected by others, you started to feel guilt. So, start taking care of your own needs along with performing your caregiving duties.

Keep your expectations realistic

It is always essential to have realistic expectations or else you will end up having more responsibilities than you can handle. If you are the one who is supposed to earn an income, do cooking and laundry as well as the one and only to help kids in their studies, it is impossible to devote more time for caregiving. So, keep realistic expectations to avoid caregiver burnout and communicate the same to rest of the family members.

Reimagine your role

In caregiving, there is a continual change in responsbilities as per the changing needs of the care recipient. So, if you are feeling overwhelming due to caregiver guilt, reimagine your role. It is not possible for you to take care of all the responsbilities, especially if you have family members who are not willing to help you in your caregiving journey. You are also human and there can be flaws and your own limitations. So, it is nothing wrong to reimagine your role as a caregiver. Think about calling someone for your help or joining a support group. You can even consider the idea of cheking out a local assisted living facility or a senior living facility where you can move your care recipeint for weekends to have a better balance between your caregiving duties and other priorities.

Remember, you are not alone and there are many other caregivers who are also struggling to deal with caregiver guilt. You can always take the help of a caregiver coach or can join a caregiver support group to deal with all the problems that you frequently encounter in your caregiving journey.
