The CLEP program, also known as the College Level Examination Program, offers students an opportunity to take an exam that earns them college credit. If you are an expert in one of the general education tests that is offered through CLEP, you can take and pass an exam instead of having to attend college classes on the subject. This option is very popular among students who are familiar with foreign languages and don't want to go through the required foreign language courses at the college or university level.

Take Advantage of High School Foreign Language Classes

An interesting aspect of the college acceptance requirements for most schools in the United States is that high school students must complete two levels of a foreign language before attending college. Once you arrive at college, you are required to earn two more levels of foreign language in order to graduate. If you excelled in your high school language classes, you may be ready to pass the CLEP exam in that language. The CLEP test will take the place of the required college foreign language classes, which frees ...
... your schedule up for other classes you are interested in. The CLEP program is a way to help you avoid wasted time when you attend college.

Earn up to 12 Credit Hours for Something You Already Know

Most foreign language requirements at the college level involve four semesters of language courses. Each semester involves purchasing a new textbook and sitting through 16 weeks of class. If you are already proficient in one of the languages offered through the CLEP program, there is no need for you to spend that time and money at school. CLEP exams can save you the tuition and time you would otherwise spend on 12 credit hours of college classes.

CLEP Rewards You for Your Foreign Language Experience

There are many reasons that a student may be proficient in a foreign language. CLEP doesn't require that you spend any specific amount of time learning a language in a particular manner. You can pass a CLEP test as long as you know the basics of the language you choose. Even if your foreign language experience is strictly practical, CLEP exams will accept the knowledge you have regardless of the method you used to acquire it. The CLEP program is widely accepted by the majority of colleges in the United States. Passing a CLEP tests is exactly the same as earning credit for a college course.

Use Your French, German, or Spanish Skills

The CLEP program offers tests that cover two different levels of French, German, or Spanish. Even if you are not an expert in a foreign language, you may be able to pass the first level CLEP exam and still save two semesters of course work. Since CLEP is a course equivalent, you will still need to be proficient enough in the language to pass the test. You are free to use whatever resources you find most effective while you study for your exam, however.
