A Hot Tub For Every Budget
The least expensive and most affordable hot tubs are those that are inflatable and portable. Inflatable, portable hot tubs are generally made of rubber, plastic or vinyl and can be folded up and put away when not in use. This type of hot tub is somewhat less durable and attractive than the wooden, molded plastic or in-ground ones, but still a great choice for a limited budget.
Hot tubs that are made of wood are generally more expensive than the portable types. Most wooden hot tubs are of simple round design and very similar to the early wooden hot tubs of pioneer days. These are solid and attractive to look at, but because of their design, generally lack all the options that more expensive acrylic models usually have. Gas, wood or electricity is used to heat the water. Although they need a solid surface or concrete slab to sit on, wooden hot tubs are otherwise easy to install. Many wooden hot tub models are available in do-it-yourself kits, making them even more affordable. However, because they are made of natural wood, more maintenance is required.
Acrylic or fiberglass above-ground hot tubs are pricier than ...
... the wooden versions. These hot tubs are generally made from acrylic and/or fiberglass shells formed with molds, with seats molded into them as well. Acrylic/fiberglass hot tubs are the most popular type for a number of reasons. Because they are above-ground and not built in to one spot, this type of hot tub can be placed in a number of spots and can be moved if necessary. Installation usually requires the services of a professional hot tub installer and a certified electrician. A concrete slab is also necessary to provide a solid base for the hot tub to sit on. Above-ground hot tubs are also popular because there are the most manufacturers making the greatest selection and variety of different models than any other style of hot tub. The huge range of different options available for above-ground hot tubs is another reason they are so popular, although many of these options are an additional cost.
In-ground hot tubs are the most expensive, and also the most luxurious and attractive. Because they are built in, they are not as exposed, and are subject to less wear and tear than other types that are more open to the elements. The expense is mainly due to the large amount of preparation required to install them. A permanent site for the hot tub needs to be carefully chosen and excavated. However, this initial outlay is a one-time cost, and once installed, maintenance costs are minimal. In-ground hot tubs also hold the heat better than any other type, and will definitely raise the value of the property on which they are built.
When shopping for a hot tub, it is important to weigh all the pros and cons of each type so that the investment is maximized and not regretted. The bottom line is, the more you can pay, the better hot tub you will get.
