As winter is approaching, audiences will spend more time indoors for a few months. Netflix has some great and new originals for the 2020 winter. October is an exciting month with incredible series, including The Haunting of Hill House, another season of Schitt’s Creek, and a new Aaron Sorkin movie. Fargo (Premiered on 1 October)
Fargo is a crime drama-black comedy anthology TV series written and created by Noah Hawley. The series is inspired by a 1996 eponymous film, which was directed and written by the Coen brothers. Fargo premiered on 15 April 2014 on FX. Each season of the series depicts a different era, new locations, and different cast. And every season is heavily influenced by various Coen brothers’ movies.
The show’s first season won the Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Directing, Outstanding Miniseries, and Outstanding Casting. Soon the fourth season was planned to premiere on 27 September 2020. It is set in Kansas City, Missouri, and stars Jessie Buckley, Ben Whishaw, Chris Rock, and Jason Schwartzman. The season follows a crime syndicate who made black migrants fleeing the state and local laws, Jim Crow laws, who have contentious relationships with Kansas City. It will consist of 11 episodes.
Hunt for the Wilderpeople (Premiered on 1 October)
Wilderpeople is an adventure comedy-drama movie directed and written by Taika Waititi, and the screenplay is based on the novel of Barry Crump titled Wild Pork and Watercress. The movie premiered on 22 January 2016 at the Sundance Film Festival in 2016. It was released on 31 March 2016 across New Zealand, although it got a limited North American release on 24 June 2016. The movie was critically acclaimed, and the performances of Neill and Dennison were praised.
The plot of Hunt for the Wilderpeople follows Ricky Baker, a juvenile criminal who was abandoned by his mother. He is taken by child welfare services and handed him over to his mother, Bella Faulkner, and her husband, Hec. Hec is a little remote, but Bella manages to break Ricky’s defensive shell by taking him for hunting on his 13th birthday. And when Bella dies, Hec informs Ricky that the child welfare service will take him back. To avoid that, Ricky fakes his suicide by burning a barn and running into it.
Hunt for the Wilderpeople received an approval score of 96% based on 195 reviews with an average of 7.88/10 ratings. And on Metacritic, the movie scored 81 based on 30 reviews, indicating “universal acclaim.”
The Haunting of Bly Manor (Premiered on 9 October)
The Haunting of Bly Manor is an upcoming supernatural horror drama television show, directed and created by Mike Flanagan for Netflix. The series is loosely based on the novel The Turn of the Screw, written by Henry James. The series’s production started on 30 September 2019 and is planned to premiere on 9 October 2020 on Netflix.
The story’s plot follows a young governess who is hired by a man to look after his nephew and niece at the country house. After arriving at the Bly estate, she starts to experience supernatural things which proceed to haunt her. It stars Victoria Pedretti, Henry Thomas, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, T’Nia Miller, Kate Sieger, Rahul Kohli, Amelia Eve, Tahirah Sharif, and Rahul Kohli.
Social Distance (Premiered on 15 October)
Social Distance is an upcoming anthology series created by Hilary Weisman Graham and Jenji Kohan. The series was conceived and executed during the quarantine. The series is solely based on the beginning months of the global pandemic COVID-19 and focuses on how friends, couples, and families are forced to cope with the quarantine situation. Each episode of the show will tell a different story with a different perspective of life. It depicts the power of the human spirit in the face of uncertainty and isolation; and how technology helps to stay connected.
The Trial of the Chicago (Premiered on 16 October)
The Trial of the Chicago 7 is a legal drama directed and written by Aaron Sorkin. The movie follows the Chicago Seven, a group of anti-Vietnam War charged with conspiracy and intention of inciting riots at the Democratic National Convention in 1968 in Chicago. It also features amazing casts, including Sacha Baron Daniel, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Daniel Flaherty, Michael Keaton, John Carroll, Noah Robbins, Alex Sharp, Eddie Redmayne, and Jeremy Strong.
Steven Spielberg wrote the original screenplay of The Trial of Chicago, but after the Writers Guild of America in 2007, Spielberg dropped out of the project when budget concerns. In 2018, Sorkin was hired as the director in October 2018. The film was planned to be released by Paramount Pictures, but due to the COVID-19, the distribution of the movie was sold to Netflix. It was released on 25 September 2020 in some selective theatres and will digitally premiere on 16 October 2020 on Netflix.
The film holds an approval rating of 91% based on 75 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, with an average rating of 7.77/10. And on Metacritic, it scored 74 out of 100 based on 27 critics.
