Oral contraceptive pills are considered the safest ways to avoid unwanted pregnancy by many and even by the physicians. It's one of the cheapest, safest and the best methods of planning one's family. It is also sometimes known as 'combined oral contraceptive pill' and is, in fact, a type of contraception. The pill has two hormones, namely oestrogen and progestogen. It's different from -a pill with progestogen-only. Oestrogen and progestogen stop the development of eggs in the ovary, so in effect, the ovary stops releasing the eggs. So, the chances of eggs getting fertilized by spermatozoa are remote. It is known that the efficacy of these pills is quite high, as high as 92%. The efficacy reaches near 100% if the pills are taken by women without fail and consistently.

You should know when to start oral contraceptive pills and you can start it as soon as buy them. You can start it any day and at any time during the menstrual cycle. You may need backup birth control methods such as the use ...
... of condoms. This you may need for up to 7 days. It is advisable that you talk to the doctor about the beginning of taking the pills. You may start combination pills anytime and any day. To make sure you're protected from pregnancy right away; you should start combo pills within 5 days after the day your period begins. There are instances when you start taking the pills any other time and, in this case, you're not sure of protection until you've taken the pills for 7 days continuously. During these days, if you have sex, you can use other birth control way such as a condom, etc.

If you are on Progestin-only pills, which are also known as mini-pills, you can begin taking them any day or time. You will be protected only after 48 hours during which you're on the pill without a break. If you take progestin-only pills, you must have it at the same time every day. If you find there is a missed dose with an interruption in taking them, you should apply other birth control methods for the next 2 days. You should know what it means to take the pills continuously. If you take the hormone pills from one packet and after it's exhausted, you start another packet without a break or without taking non-hormone pills. In this case, you'll be missing your periods. Non-hormone pills are the placebos.
