The most commonly used type of pump for transferring fluids is a centrifugal pump. Using the rotational energy from the motor, the pump moves fluids or water. These pumps are widely used across industries – agriculture, industrial, chemical, petroleum, power generation plants, pharma amongst others. Centrifugal pumps prove to be of so much importance because they can handle large quantities of liquids, all this with their ability to adjust their flow rates.

Basis the shaft orientation, centrifugal pumps can be of two types: vertical and horizontal.

Vertical Centrifugal Pump
With their shafts being placed vertically, vertical centrifugal pumps require lesser footprint, and are an ideal fit where there is space crunch or space is priced high. Due to their design, vertical pumps need spacious, larger headroom for smooth installation, and to easily conduct servicing and maintenance. Vertical centrifugal pumps are available in different sizes, material, and hydraulic combinations, making ...
... these pumps a right fit in case of level of flow is consistent. These pumps are relatively expensive and arduous to fit.

Horizontal Centrifugal Pump
Since the orientation of the shaft is horizontal, these pumps require bigger space compared to vertical pumps. It is mostly suited for indoor applications due to its low headroom requirement. Easier to install, maintain and service due to easy access to its motor and parts.

On the basis of number of impellers installed in a pump, pumps can be of different stages:
• Single stage pumps – with one impeller, simple design, ideal for low-pressure installations
• Two stage pumps – with two impellers used for medium head applications
• Multi-stage pumps – with three or more impellers used for high head service

Vertical centrifugal pumps can be used for a variety of applications, such as:
• For supplying fire water to industrial plants
• Where a submersible pump cannot be used due to flow of the water being above the pump range
• For pumping water from rivers, wells, reservoirs
• For pumping water from wells and supply for irrigation

There are a variety of vertical pumps available, such as:
• Submersible pumps
• In-line pumps
• Barrel pumps
• Vertical column pumps
• Deep well pumps
• Can pumps
• Industrial pumps
• Vertical turbine, also called deep well turbine pump

Advantages of vertical pumps can be many:
• Saves on space because of its design
• Since the driver is above the floor, less danger of damage due to flooding
• Lower maintenance
• Versatility in usage
• Adaptability to different water levels and water supplies
