Why Does Cylinder Liner Play An Important Role In The Engine?
An engine is a mechanical component used to transfer one form of energy to another. Nowadays, in many mechanical devices, the engine plays a crucial part. However, these are divided into different forms. For instance, heat engines such as internal combustion engines use fuel to produce heat for its operation. On the other hand, electric motors transfer electrical energy to mechanical energy for their operation.
However, to maintain such engines, its components need to be manufactured according to their desired criteria. Thus, many engine piston suppliers generally look at developing the parts of the engine perfectly. In order to make everything work smoothly. Let’s see how to manufacture the major component of the engine.
What Is Cylinder Liner?
A cylinder liner is a cylindrical element which is placed inside the cylinder and where the piston reciprocates. It is the most crucial part of the interior of an engine. In some countries, it’s also known as a cylindrical sleeve. However, the liner is used to design separately from the cylindrical ...
... block. The following are the reasons why to design both the elements solely.
➔ Use Of Superior Material: Both elements are made up of different materials. In order words, the liner is manufactured using cast iron alloyed with vanadium, chromium, and molybdenum, whereas cylindrical blocks are made of grey cast iron. It’s because the cast iron consists of graphite, which acts as a lubricant, and the alloying elements provide resistance against corrosion and improve resistance against wear at high temperatures.
➔Requires Maintenance: Though the liner’s alloy increases its wear resistance, it still eventually wears with time. Therefore, it should be timely checked and replaced within time. On the contrary, the cylindrical jacket has a good life span and lasts until the engine’s life. Thus, the engine piston suppliers prefer to manufacture them solely.
➔Expansion At Great Temperature: Generally, at the working temperature, the liner is a way hotter than the cylindrical block. So the liner gets expanded more in both directions lengthwise and diametrically. If both are monolithically cast, then undesirable thermal stress would develop, resulting in the material’s fracture.
Since the liner gets very hot during the engine’s working when fuel is burned to produce energy as the heat is transferred from the liner to the cylindrical wall of the chamber. Thus it’s necessary to keep the temperature within the acceptable limit. So, the liner gets cooled immediately.
➔Fewer Defects: Many engine piston suppliers believe in manufacturing simple and homogeneous casting to avoid defects. Thus the more complex it cast, the more difficult to stay homogeneous and fewer amounts of stress.
Types of the cylinder liner
According to their types of applications these cylindrical liners are divided into the following types:
➔ Dry Cylinder Liner: It is a primitive piston protector. These types of cylinder liner can provide resistance against extremely high temperatures and also protect piston against impurities. Though the liner does not connect with the engine coolant, still, they are very close in contact with the cylinder block to protect the piston against impurities and heat. Thus, the dry cylinder liner is made of high-grade materials like ceramic-nickel painting and cast iron.
➔Wet Cylinder Liner: These liners are also made of the same material from which dry cylinder liner is produced. However, these liners distinctly protect the piston. In other words, the wet cylinder liner interacts with the engine coolant. Sometimes these are equipped with a small opening to allow the heat and impurities to transfer from it. Such types of liners are known as water-jacket liners, a type of wet cylinder liner.
➔Finned Cylinder Liners: These liners are specially manufactured for an air-cooled engine where the engine’s cooling medium is air. They are also made of the same type of materials from which dry cylinder liners are made. However, these are fixed with small fins that accelerate the flow of air so that the inflow of air could result in cooling in the engine.
The India Piston Ring has been into manufacturing the top class piston rings, cylinder sleeves and different types of engine parts. It has been making the types of parts of the engine and also its subparts, for a number of decades now, using the best in class and state-of-art technology to manufacture the products.
