People often moan about how clich?d holidays have become for the vast majority of people. Where once Spain seemed exotic and almost magical, nowadays with the package deals that take people out there you might as well go to Grimsby for the same amount of novelty.

People are looking ever further and further afield for holiday destinations, choosing to visit entirely different continents and travel halfway around the world in order to find a small piece of what made travel so exciting.

However, there is absolutely no need to go this far if you don''t want to. There are exotic places to be found right on europe''s doorstep. Many people forget that there is an entire continent just a short hop across the Mediterranean, and that this is a place left pretty much untouched by the kind of package deals that ruin other destinations for people.

I am talking of course of Africa. Not the safari plains and savannahs that people think of when they see films like the Lion King, but the northern part. The deserts, the Arabian villages and cities, the pyramids. There is a whole half of Africa that people just forget about.

... are hundreds of places you can visit, but start with the obvious ones. Egypt of course is the main pull with all the pyramids, Cairo and Alexandria and the Nile; then there is Tunisia where a lot of the Star Wars saga was filmed in its unsurpassed desert scenery and then there is Morocco, my personal favourite.

Unlike a few of its neighbours, Morocco remains one of the more liberal Muslim countries and its King, Mohammed VI is actively promoting education for women and respect for Berber culture, the core cultural force in the region.

Casablanca is where a lot of people go, as to is Rabat, but for me the only contender is Marrakesh. In this glorious city all you need to do is disappear down a windy alley one day and you are enchanted for weeks, like the stories of old. I spent two weeks in a majestic riad being pampered and I can honestly say it was the best holiday of my life.

Moreover the place is cheap. Airlines are expanding to morocco so the prices are coming down.
