We are in the full swing of winter, and no doubt you’ve been using your outdoor heater to stay toasty. Whether it be an electrical or gas powered unit, they can become a huge hazard when mistreated and not maintained. Here is some of our advice on how to safely use an outdoor heater to prevent fire and burn hazards.

All heaters have built-in safety features
All modern outdoor heaters have built-in safety features to help keep everybody safe. In case of an emergency, you should know about these features. These are not limited to but include:

Cut gas flow button
Automatic turn off when tilted too far off center.
No naked flames
Thermocouple prevents gas leaks if flame is extinguished
CSA safety rating

As a general rule of thumb, you should read through the user manual/instructions at least once to learn how your heater works. Your manual will show you the main areas to keep track of. For peace of mind, you should always check the gas hose for any leaks, and schedule regular patio heater maintenance from a professional. If your hose is damaged, look into getting a replacement ...

Be aware of the weather
Patio heaters are sturdy and are designed to resist against minor weather conditions such as wind and rain. But when the weather becomes too intense, such as heavy rain or storms, it's best to put them away in a secured area. Electric heaters can be at greater risk during these periods so make sure to keep them unplugged & switched off.

Give your heater adequate space
Most people know to create a fireproof space for their heaters just in case. Although don’t forget about leaving space above and below your heater as well! Placing your heater under a tree or patio awning for example may risk overheating the heater if there isn’t enough airflow and space for it to breathe. If your space becomes stuffy, open windows and doors to allow fresh air to ventilate the area to avoid any buildup of carbon monoxide. Not to mention the heat radiating from the heater could also damage surfaces that are too close. Check your manual for surfaces that the heater should not be placed on as well. If your heater is in a smaller space, you can save money on heating by getting the room warm, then turning off the heater for a while. When the residual heat is gone, turn it back on. It will cost less to sue periodically than all the time.

Keep children and pets safe
A patio heater should only be used around responsible adults. Its not very practical to set up barricades around the heater because adults would also want to use it, so its important to establish rules and boundaries for young ones so they understand fire and burn prevention. Do not allow children to touch the heater, and never leave them unsupervised around one.

It may also be worthwhile grabbing a small fire extinguisher and fire blanket nearby just in case! In the event of a fire spreading, you have the tools nearby to quickly react and extinguish the flames.

If you’ve been looking for a reason to invest in an outdoor space heater for your home, venue or business, now is the best time to fight off this winter, and keep the chill away for many winters to come.
