Have you ever been out on a road trip and gone to clean your windscreen only to realise that the cleaner tank is empty? This happens to people all the time and the question then comes up about whether you need to use the proper cleaning fluid in the windscreen wiper tank or if you can get away with just using water instead.
Water is readily available in almost all places. Service stations, fast food stores or even the half-filled bottle in the back seat of your car. Depending on where you are, getting your hands on some wiper cleaner might be difficult.

Why do I need windscreen cleaning products?
A clear view of what is in front of you is crucial whilst driving. If you can not see properly due to a dirty windscreen it can cause all sorted of troubles. The cleaning products that are designed for windscreens are made up of different chemicals that will help to combat the types of dirt and debris that you may encounter on your windscreen.
This may include bugs, dirt and mud and also streaks from recent rains. These cleaning products have the properties to properly clean these particles off your ...
... windscreen and leave it clear to see through.

Where do I buy it?
Most car service stations will carry a line of windscreen cleaner so that if you are out and about you should be able to get your hands on it. Automotive stores and also the local grocery stores will also stock them.

When you purchase your cleaner, make sure you check the instructions on the bottle before using. Some of these products are quite thick and need to be diluted before being put in the tank. Also ensure that you are not filling it up above the maximum markers.
If you live in very cold areas you can also get cleaners that have an anti-freeze property to them so that you are not left with frozen solid liquid in the mornings when trying to clean your windscreen.

Can I use water instead
Water can be used on its own in the cleaning tank and for cleaning your windscreens. The concern that comes up with this is that there are no actual cleaning properties to water. Which means you are essentially just rubbing the dirt and grime back and forth along the window. The water will help to remove some of the mess, but chances are it will not get it all. And you will probably have a lot of streaks along the windscreen.

Water on its own is also not ideal in the colder areas. The water has a higher chance of freezing, making it impossible to clean your windscreen.

What is the recommendation?
Although water can be used on its own, it is still recommended to use a proper cleaning solution to ensure that you are properly cleaning your windscreen.

By using the cleaners, you will be able to have a clear view ahead of you and reduce your risk of accidents. If you are in a situation where you cannot get a hold of anything other than water, use water on its own until you can get some cleaner. You can approach any car service workshop as well and they might be able to help you by filling up for a small price.

Being able to see is one of the most important parts of driving. Don’t compromise your sight to save a few dollars.
