A Guide To The Festivals Of Menorca

The Menorcans love to party and with festivals and fiestas taking place in every month of the year thy have plenty of reasons to celebrate. Festivals range from traditional religious festivals and saints days through to more modern festivities that celebrate local music and the arts. All festivals are suitable for all the family.
Wherever celebrations are taking place you are sure to see the Menorcan horse. The horse is a particularly important emblem of Menorca, with the special Menorcan breed having been carefully bred to create an elegant shape and distinct black colouring.
As well as traditional dishes and handmade cakes, sweets and treats, you will find plenty of refreshments at all Menorcan celebrations. A signature drink at festivities is the Pomeda cocktail. This is a delicious mixture of gin and lemonade or lemon juice.
By far the most important festival in the Menorcan calendar is the festival of Sant Joan in Ciutadella. You will see the Menorcan black horse opening up the festivities, parading through the streets and doing tricks. The festival takes place on 23rd and 24th June each year.
Carnival ...
... parades take place throughout the island during the month of February and are a great day out for all the family. Traditional music is played, colourful costumes are everywhere and singing, dancing and partying takes place through the night, especially in Palma.
One of the most colourful celebrations you are ever likely to see is the Festa de Maig. This flower festival takes place on the first Sunday of May in Santa Eulalia as the city streets are strewn in local flowers and parades and parties take place throughout the day and night.
No trip to Menorca is complete without sampling some of the delicious local speciality dishes. One of the best ways to try a bit of everything is to head to the Festa del Estandard on December 31st. This huge feast takes place on the streets and in restaurants and bars, with the party continuing late into the evening.
You will find many festivals that celebrate the sea in Menorca, but also festivals that celebrate agriculture and the importance of food. The traditional Dilous Bo, which takes place on the third Thursday in November is a celebration of the harvest and local produce and you will find many local dishes to whet your appetite here.
