Core Workout: Strengthen Your Abdominals At Home
Believe it or not, you don’t have to go to the gym to remain fit and continue building your muscles and core strength. There are plenty of ab workouts you can do in the comfort and safety of your home. The best ones are those that will work multiple layers of muscles making up your entire abdominal wall. You won’t see or feel them, especially the nerves, soft tissues and blood vessels, but all of them are critical for keeping your body stable and strong.
Targeting the right muscles
The rectus abdominis is usually the muscle associated with your abs, as it is the outermost one along both sides of the abdominal wall. The deepest muscle of your abdominal wall is the transverse abdominis; it lies closest to the spine and wraps around the torso between the hips and ribs. The oblique muscles are along the sides of the torso, with two sets known as the internal obliques, which are above transverse abdominis, and external obliques, which are on top.
As you do ab workouts, you will need to target the right muscles to strengthen them. Think of all those muscles as a single unit. Even as you perform some exercises ...
... that are aimed at a particular muscle or two, you will find that it is necessary to engage the entire midsection to do them correctly. That’s proof that your ab muscles are not entirely working by themselves.
That said, your ab workouts need to be able to target all the abdominal muscles to strengthen them well. Many bodyweight ab and core exercises can help with that. You can do them as standalone workouts with 12 to 15 reps for each exercise and repeat the circuit of four or five exercises three to four times. Alternatively, you can add four or five at the end of your full workout. Be sure to stop and reset when there is tension in the lower back while exercising and ensure your back is not arched and that your core is completely engaged.
