So your daughter has come home and she wants to know about her family. Her teacher has given her a special project and she has to create a family tree. Well, instead of springing the crayons and paper, why not save some of the world's resources while creating something more durable for the entire family to enjoy.

Choosing an Approach

There are many styles in which you can create your family tree website but for the purpose of this tutorial I'm choosing a classic approach. Take a look at our My Family Tree template. What it offers is an elegant and fun approach to building a family tree. You can add as many pages as you like and customize them according to your tastes, but this free web design presents a good backbone with which to start.

Picture Elements

The homepage displays the classic 'family tree', which is a picture element over a background that resembles old paper and is also a picture element. ... the designers have locked everything together. There are many elements on this page and grouping and locking elements is a good way of avoiding mishaps. That's actually something good to remember for the future. Double click the picture or an area on the page and choose ungroup from the small popup menu. If you want to regroup a few elements, either collect them with the control button or gather them together with the mouse. Then click the small blue square that appears at the side of your box.

Ungroup the Group

After ungrouping the elements, click on the background and then replace in the popup menu. To upload your own pictures click the media button from the main left hand menu and the 'pics' menu item. Also, you can use the many pictures available in Wix's galleries.

Text Types

To change the texts simply click on them and click edit. You can change the font and size. These texts are considered titles, but you can also use the paragraph text box and resize it according to your needs. If you do so, you might notice that the texts are smaller than with the title tool. That's because titles are automatically larger. Just give it a bigger size in the text menu on the bottom where you can also change the color of the letters.

Individual Pages

The template gives you five personal pages for family members. The pages include a short text block in which you can write something about each family member, such as their occupation, date of birth, hobbies and other fun details. These text blocks function in the same manner as the text block (with the person's name) from the homepage.

Add Pages

You can add as many pages as you like using the add page option at the top right hand corner of the page. If you want to duplicate a certain page click the manage option, right above the add page button, and duplicate any page you want. Now use the arrows to move the pages around until they're laid out in the order you want them.

Picture Sliders

Each personal page also includes a gallery slider. To add pictures click on the picture box and manage photos. Add a description and some text to make it more personal and interesting. You can change the slider skin and add different effects, determine the type of transition that exists between the pictures and many other options that become available when you click the bottom menu.

Mini-Sliders

The last page available in the template is a photo gallery page. It uses a mini page with a slider and each slide includes several photos. Use the existing platform or switch it around and make it a picture slider. The principles of action to changing the photos here are similar to those for galleries so don't worry about complications. Just click the picture you want to change and notice it's all the same from there on.
