Days Out Around Mallorca
Mallorca is one of Europe''s most popular package destinations and a perfect place to go if you''re looking for sun, sea and sand. But away from the tourist spots, the island is one of the most beautiful in the Mediterranean and offers a wealth of activities from sightseeing to adventure sports.
If you''ve dismissed Mallorca as too conventional for your tastes, then here are five day trips that might help change your mind.
1. Caves of Drach: A great excursion for both families and couples, the Caves of Drach lend themselves to exploration. Take a tour through the cave system, seeing three awe-inspiring chambers as well as one of the biggest underground lakes in the world. The classical music played by musicians on the boats combined with a wealth of incredible rock formations make this a truly unforgettable experience.
2. Palma to Soller: The railway from Palma Soller isn''t just a way of getting from A to B ? the views from the coaches as the train winds its measured way through pristine countryside are unparalleled in Mallorca. A thriving market town complete with a beautiful beach awaits you on arrival ...
... in Soller.
3. Palma Aquarium: If you''re travelling with children then keeping them entertained can be a struggle. When tantrums threaten, avert disaster with a trip to Palma Aquarium. This extensive marine park recreates oceanic habitats and ecosystems, hosting a range of exotic sea life including hammerhead sharks, rays and turtles.
4. Alcudia: The beautiful market town of Alcudia lies in the north east of Mallorca and makes a great day trip. The pre-Roman settlement boasts a well preserved amphitheatre, a medieval chapel and a number of interesting museums, as well as a stunning six-mile beach.
5. Capocorb Vell: If you have a taste for historical sight-seeing, then a visit to Capocorb Vell is a must. The prehistoric settlement is excellently preserved, and boasts the remains of several houses as well as a number of Bronze Age megaliths. The site is located in the south of Malllorca and dates back to approximately 1,000 BC.
Despite its small size, Mallorca offers tourists plenty to do and see ? but to make the most of the island''s attractions you will almost certainly need to hire a car. A vehicle is an easier and more reliable alternative to public transport, and will give you access to a wealth of secluded Mallorcan destinations. Bonny Kominek is a well travelled writer with over 20 years travel experience. They recommend Mallorca for a sunny, relaxing break and Ritmo Cars for car hire in Mallorca.
