Deciding on HVAC Units and HVAC System Design

If you’re thinking about retrofitting an HVAC Unit in your building or deliberating over what type of HVAC system design you’ll need for a new construction project, there a number of factors to consider. You’ll want to begin by consulting an experienced HVAC system design team that can help you choose the right HVAC system design and HVAC Unit for your space. HVAC system design decisions are complicated and must weigh a number of factors like the heating and cooling loads of your building, energy efficiency standards, humidity control, outdoor air flow, building codes and of course expense.

Choosing an HVAC Unit Air Handler

The air handler is an essential part of your HVAC system design. The air handler heats and cools air and then circulates it throughout your building. The US. Department of Energy recommends the following when selecting an air handler:

* Double wall doors for improved insulation
* Corrosion resistant links and dampers
* Double-sloped pans to prevents standing ...
... water
* Stainless steel or plastic drain pans to prevent corrosion
* Large filter banks that allow for greater filtration and increased energy efficiency
* Air filter monitors that indicate static pressure drops across the filter bank
* Easy access to filters, drain pans, and cooling coils
* Double wall cabinets to protect insulation from moisture and decrease noise
* Sealed cabinets

Choose an HVAC Unit with Central Air Handlers

Whenever possible pick an HVAC Unit with central air handlers that serve multiple rooms instead of individual heat pumps or unit ventilators. There are a number of advantages to an HVAC system design with central air handlers including:

* Fewer components to maintain
* Easier access to HVAC unit means easier maintenance and repair
* Compatibility with high efficiency air filters
* Stronger construction

* More reliable outdoor air flow
* Noise reduction
* Reduced draft because of additional air supplies
* Improved humidity control

HVAC Unitâ€Energy Recovery Ventilation Equipment

HVAC system design not only affects air comfort levels for your occupants but the level of indoor air quality as well. That’s why good HVAC system design will increase the amount fresh outdoor air flowing into your building. Energy Recovery Ventilation (ERV) systems are available that can precondition outdoor air entering your building through the ventilation system and then transfer energy between the ventilation air flow and the exhaust air flow. Ask your HVAC management team about installing an ERV system in your building. ERV systems are especially cost effective in hot and humid climates like South Florida.

Whether your retrofitting an HVAC unit or installing an energy efficient HVAC system design in a new space, you can expect to save on energy costs over time. Be sure to talk to your facilities management team about which HVAC unit is best for your building.
