The use of framed art in one's home can create a specific mood. Photographs, prints, paintings and other forms of art can be used as focal points within a room, and can even be the basis from which all other decorative components in the room radiate. A skilled designer may draw common elements out of the framed art to create a cohesive and stunning room decor.

Some forms of wall art are designed without a frame or barrier, creating no distinctive separation between the art itself and the larger room. Artistic pieces of this type can make very unique displays and when properly used, can establish and exceptional mood within a room. The nature of unframed arts' interaction with its surroundings makes its effective and skilled use in design significantly more challenging.

From the artist's view, framing creates a clear distinction between the image and its earthly surroundings, encouraging the audience to view the artistic image with singular clarity. The artist wishes viewers to consider the art as a standalone item, unencumbered by thoughts of those real world elements residing outside of the frame.

When ...
... holding to this traditional display model for hanging art in the home, the decorator should use a heavy and obvious frame - one which very clearly establishes the boundary between the art and its surroundings. This method is especially effective when the art being displayed is of exceptional quality. A prized original painting or high quality print are examples of art that benefits from this type of display.

A skilled decorator is still capable of drawing elements from a heavily framed painting to expand the mood or feel of the painting to a larger surrounding area. Use of similar colors and textures to those found within the artistic image gives the larger room a strong connection to the piece, creating a captivating and appealing style for the entire area in which the art is hung.

Less distinctive but still appealing pieces of wall art can often be best displayed with less heavy or intricate frames, allowing them to blend more with their surroundings. These pieces are still strong design elements in a room, often attracting the attention of visitors but they are not the central focus of the room and therefore do not require as definitive of display techniques. In fact, these types of prints or photographs should be mingled with other design components to establish the cohesive whole of the room's decor.

Methods of effectively framing art utilize not only the frames themselves but frequently matting as well. A matted image is one contained within a single or multiple frames placed inside of the external frame. Matting draws the eye of the viewer inward, toward the heart of the image. This can be especially beneficial for more distinctive prints or ones the designer wishes to emphasize.

Matting must be complementary in color and texture to the image being displayed, blending well and residing effectively with the exterior frame. A designer or decorator should strive to achieve a comprehensive whole from the display. The frame, mat, and piece of art are to be seen as a single unit.

Effective framing methods take into account the scale of the art, ensuring the frame is proportionate to the image being displayed. A skilled designer will also consider the orientation of the image when selecting a frame, carefully choosing one that supports the image and directs the eyes of the viewer.

The hanging of framed art is another key component to creating a bold impression with art. The placement of wall art can make or break the feel of a room, and the manner in which it is hung should be carefully considered.

A survey of the space is beneficial when making decisions regarding the placement of wall art. Design elements of the room's architecture should be viewed as entryways to the composition of the piece of art. Properly aligning architectural elements of the room with the lines of the frame or linear elements in the artwork can bring an exciting flare to the room in which the art is displayed.

Windows, doors, inset bookcases, and fireplaces are frames already present within the design elements of many rooms. These elements can be the means to achieving harmony in decor, with framed art hung around them in ways which bring these elements to a cohesive whole.

Doorways and windows with distinctive art hung on either side can foster a mystical aura, opening a venue to another world entirely. Curved design elements in a room can be entwined with multiple smaller pieces of art to produce a pathway of art and design appreciation.
