The first novel in the Tamil language was Athaapa Mudaliaar Charithram ("The Life of Prathama Mudaliaar"), written in 1857 and published in 1879. Not involving historical characters or events, the novel is set in royal times. Penned by Maayuram Vedanaayakam Pillai, this was a landmark in Tamil literature which had only seen writings in poetry up to now. A new literary genre has been born in the book, and the Tamil prose began to be identified as an increasingly important part of the language. In this short story one can see the style of any Tamil author.

Aabathukidamaana Apavaadham -or- Kamalaambaal Charithram is the first Tamil novel depicting the life of living humans, written by Rajam Iyer of Vathalakundu in the later part of the 19th century. The author has worked for the daily Dinamani in Tamil; he resides only 26 years. Given the period in which he lived and wrote, he created waves which are incomparable to any social reformist in the emancipation of women's lives. He did marriage to a Brahmin widow in this story. If he had lived longer, and had written more, modern Tamil prose style would have been different.
