Why New Sleeper Beds Are More Comfortable Than Old Style Sleepers
Sleeper beds have always been an appealing idea, creating an easy guest room or bedroom in any room of an apartment or house. The conversion of a sofa, chair, or couch to a bed for guests or yourself makes the versatile use of your space possible. Through the use of a sleeper, you're able to have a sitting room, living room, or den easily convert to a guest room or bedroom in no time flat.
Though the idea of a sleeper bed has always been appealing, the beds themselves have often fallen short of ideal sleeping arrangements. The original sleeper beds were heavy pieces of furniture, constructed of thick and cumbersome medal components. Frames were difficult to handle, prone to mechanical failure, and uncomfortable to sleep on.
There was nothing more frustrating than an old-style sleeper bed that didn't want to unfold when it was time for guests to go to bed. Also incredibly frustrating is the old-style sleeper that didn't want to return to its collapsed format after guests had left, leaving you with a full-sized bed in the middle of your living room or den, where your sofa or couch should have been.
Moving ...
... an older sleeper sofa or couch was backbreaking work. The heavy frame and mechanical components of the sleeper made even minor movement of the piece of furniture nearly impossible. It was always best to place the sleeper where you thought it should be and never move it again until the frame failed and you were tasked with trying to remove the hefty and awkward piece of furniture from your home.
Comfortable mattresses in early sleeper beds were another elusive feature. The materials available for the production of early models of sleeper mattresses were quite limited. The thickness required of a comfortable mattress simply could not easily be achieved with the materials available at the time, making early sleepers uncomfortable accommodations for your guests.
Changes in technology have allowed sleepers to become much more comfortable, durable, and manageable pieces of home furnishings. Advancements in metallurgy have made it possible to create strong and durable frames from lighter weight metal alloys. These frames are less prone to mechanical failure and much easier to handle.
Advancements in mattress materials and the creation of lightweight but sturdy and comfortable synthetic mattresses have also increased the effectiveness and comfort of sleepers. Older mattresses had to be thick in order to be comfortable. Newer mattresses are thinner and still provide adequate support and comfort for a good night's sleep.
With the appearance of thinner and more comfortable mattresses, sleepers have become much more accommodating sleeping arrangements. The thinner mattresses allow guests to have a comfortable night's rest on a mattress thin enough to fold easily and slip into hiding inside of the sleeper sofa, couch, or chair.
No longer are guests expected to sleep on a paper-thin mattress through which they can feel the metal frame. Old mattresses were also prone to breakage, as mattress materials would degenerate or come loose over time and with use. Old-style sleeper mattresses often had uncomfortable lumps and bumps, preventing the user from finding a comfortable position in which to sleep.
New sleepers offer users a firm but pliable mattress on which to sleep, and one void of lumpy hills or uncomfortable dips. The new mattress materials prevent frames from being felt through the mattress when a person lies down, making for a better and more comfortable night's rest.
Advancements in the metal frames and mattresses available with new sleepers have made them more comfortable accommodations for your guests. The new mechanical components have also made them more practical pieces of furniture. Changes in the mechanisms used in sleeper expansion and collapse have allowed diversification in the style of sleepers as well.
Early sleepers were required to take on a particular shape and appearance, simply as a result of the mechanical requirements of the folding bed contained in the sofa or couch. Newer sleepers with more technically advanced mechanical components can now assume any number of shapes and appearances.
New sleepers come in so many varieties that they can be difficult to spot. It was once easy to see that a piece of furniture was a convertible sleeper sofa as it was boxy, cumbersome, and somewhat unsightly in appearance. New sleepers are so advanced that they can easily appear to be just a sofa, chair or couch until put into use as a comfortable and affordable guest bed.
