The perfect time to take up the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra
The Himalayas is often regarded as one of the most mystical places to exist on the planet earth. Covering a vast majority of some of the most important Asian nations, it is the home to numerous highest peaks of the world and sacred holy destinations of many religions.
• The History of the Kailash Mansarovar
Located in the Tibetan-Chinese region of the Himalayas, is the Mount Kailash, the pyramid-shaped mountain peak that has not yet been climbed by any mountaineering experts. This virgin peak accounts for some of the most ancient legends and rumors.
The Himalayan Kailash ranges are often believed to be over 30 million years old as mentioned in some of the most ancient scriptures of the world. At a massive elevation of 6,675 meters above sea level, it is believed that the peak rose as a single granite slab from amidst the ancient Tethys Sea.

• The best time to take up the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra
Travelling to an elevation of 21,780 ft above sea level is not possible all year round. Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is open to pilgrims from April to October.
Between the month of April to June and September to October, the visibility is the clearest of all. Circumnutating around the peak becomes much easier due to the clear sky and warmer temperature.
Though travelling between July and August is permitted, however, the rain and fog make it slightly difficult to see or travel through the slippery and uneven terrain. In fact, many believe that the dense cloud and mist gives the area completely mystical and a mystery shrouded appeal during this time.
November to February no permits are given to travel to Kailash Mansarovar due to the extremely harsh weather in the region. The temperature often falls below sub-zero with winds blowing at a massive 100 miles per hr speed during this time of the year.
• Reaching Kailash Mansarovar
By Air –
There are no major international airports in the area. The nearest airport is Ngari Gunsa Airport at a distance of 210 km from the holy site. It is connected to Kashgar and Xinjiang in China and Lhasa in Tibet via China Eastern Airlines and Lucky Air.
The other closest airport includes Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport in Lucknow at a distance of 437 km and Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu which is 501 km away.
By Bus –
Buses are available primarily from 4 locations.
1. Indian border near Pithoragarh in the Uttarakhand state of India
2. Shigatse in Tibet
3. Kashgar in China
4. Simikot and Hilsa in Nepal
Private Jeep’s and helicopter rides are available to take, however that is only provided by local private travel and tour operators. The helicopter can be hired from Nepalganj to fly up to Simikot. From there Jeep ride can be taken to Taklakot and henceforth.
• The estimate cost and duration of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra
The entire trip for an Indian citizen to and from Kailash Mansarovar can take between 17 to 21 days depending on the choice of route and mode of transport. Excluding the duration for the journey alone, 2 to 3 days of time is needed extra for preparation and formalities in Delhi.
Inclusive of all the transportation, food, lodging, permit fares and porter charges the trip can cost between $3,500 and $4,000.
It should be noted the age limit for applying for the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra by Helicopter
visa is between 11 yrs to 70 yrs of age only.
