Ice - Applying an ice pack to the injured area for 10-20 minutes is the most useful remedy for injuries. Use it every two to three hours initially and remember to wrap it with a towel before applying to avoid any ice burn.
Compression - Using an elastic compression bandage will help reduce any further swelling.
Elevation - Elevating the affected body part above the level of your heart often will also limit any swelling.
Immobilization
Immobilization is the process of reducing any movement which helps in preventing any further damage to the affected area. It also helps in reducing swelling in the muscles, muscle spasms and any other pain in the muscle. Splints, casts and slings are used to immobilize the injured area such as legs, shoulders, arms and wrists giving you time to heal. However, in cases of minor sprains, immobilization is not always recommended. You can try to move the affected area as soon as you feel better without putting much strain and make sure it does not hurt when you move it.
