1. Find the crux of problem.
In order to motivate an inefficient employee you should be aware of the root cause generating under performance. The employee might not have a clear understanding of what is expected of him/her. Besides, it could be possible that an efficient employee turns inefficient. More often than not, inefficiency in such case is related to personal problems in an employee life. In some cases efficient employees lose motivation to outperform because of lack of an acknowledgement. It is of vital importance ...
... that an employees are appraised and rewarded as and when they achieve splendid results. Apart from this, the root cause for under performance could be inadequate skill sets. Only when you are aware of the problem, could you find or address a solution.
2. Spread awareness
Most of the times, under performance is not dealt with directly because of the lack of awareness on an employee part. In order to address a problem, the employee must be made aware of his under performance. Instead of confronting an employee, it is advisable to sit him down and strategically draw the conversation towards his under performance. Don't be vague and prove your stand through figures and data. Address this issue with calm demeanor by finding solution on mutual grounds. Also, it is important to bring realization among an employees that their inefficiency is adversely affecting an organization and team. And how their individual efforts could bear fruitful results in an organization.
3. Devise strategies and lay out plans.
There don't exist a problem without a solution. Communicate with your employee and devise action plans to overcome inefficiency. Set realistic and achievable goals and arrange for training within an organization. It is of crucial importance to communicate expectations. Take you employee into confidence that you trust their abilities and through strategic planning and implementation, he would be back on track with his outstanding performance.
4. Monitoring and follow up.
All your efforts would go in vain without an appropriate monitoring system. Keep a tab and don't miss an opportunity to appraise your employee for his/her performance. Through regular follow ups you could observe improvement in their performance.
5. Rewards and appraisal
In order to motivate an employee, you must be aware of what actually motivates your employee. Only then could you devise the solution for under performance. In most of the cases rewards and appraisal in form of monetary and non-monetary incentives works best. Praise your employees when they achieve results, no matter how negligible their contribution. Only when your employees feel wanted, would they work with diligent efforts.
Inefficiency isn't entirely a fault of an employee. Through collective efforts, the problem of under performance could be rectified.
