Technology was the best thing that happened to humans; from letting the world see what universe has in store for them to enabling its people to order groceries online, technology became synonymous to convenience, ease and development. What’s funny is that humans became so hungry for convenience that they decided to convert something as abstract and time consuming as love into a game of few minutes at the mercy of the fingertips.

1995 was the year, the first online dating site was launched. Almost two decades later, the first online dating application came to LA and the rest of the world. The process of finding love took a ‘drastic’ change. Elaborate love gestures for a romantic interest turned into a game of swiping and matching. Initially the introduction of online dating sites and free online dating applications in Los Angeles didn’t just become a game changer but a source that was well appreciated among people, especially millennial. The reason being, convenience is what humans seek, and easiest ways of functionality is what every millennial desires.

Dating apps were a huge success in many parts ...
... of the world. The US saw the biggest boom of all, especially in places like Los Angeles, Texas, West Hollywood and Santa Monica. It is because places like these are crowded with the highest number of working men and women. Being busy professionals, they anyways lacked time, and something like a dating app or site did nothing but made their work of finding love much more effortless. However, everything has and once drawbacks start surfacing, people lose their hopes in it and start looking for alternatives. Sadly, that’s what happened with the best dating apps in Los Angeles as well.

Once the dating apps became a part of everyone’s phone, the options of finding the special someone increased many folds. Hundreds of options in hand yet dissatisfaction on a mass scale. The paradox of choice defeated the main purpose of dating apps by making its users spend hours in a day swiping just to get a single match. Some got lucky and went on multiple dates, while those who didn’t get lucky spent days in front of mirrors trying to find an answer. Rejection by a “dating app” instilled its users with a feeling of emptiness, low confidence and resentment. Studies prove how these applications are a huge cause of depression among the millennial. As per statistics, 14% of adults in LA were depressed of which 30% were depressed due to rejections they have been facing on dating apps.

This does not mean that those who found their match easily online were contended for life. Reports show that only one-third of the total matches turned into real dates. Also, some users admitted to being so addicted to the feeling of a new person every few days, that long term commitment became burdensome and less exciting. Such users didn’t see anything wrong with ‘ghosting’ or ‘bread crumbling’ someone on dating apps which negatively impacted the mental health of those being subjected to such ‘cruelty’ online.

Dating apps were developed to save time, to enable its users meet new people easily. It wanted to ensure that none were left lonely. But what these apps did was to make people lonelier than ever, wasted their time and affected their mental health negatively. These dating apps became our toxic boyfriends and girlfriends that were difficult to let go of and equally tough to be with. The need of the hour is something that brings back old school love to reality however, with time efficiency. As the world is gripped with the recent wave of innovation, finding a solution to this modern day problem will be high on everyone’s agenda. The irony is that the problem has surfaced due to one of the modern day innovation i.e. dating apps hence the solution also lies in tech innovation. After all, who wouldn’t like to have that best friend who helps us get rid of the s#@t in our life!!!
