So you are inside your house, lounging around, dripping away sweat because of the mid-morning heat of summer. You opt to wear your summer clothes – actually just bits of fabric to cover your private parts. As you lay on the couch watching the ceiling and thinking about what to have for lunch, wham! You spot a wasp near you. It hovers above, slowly flying, actually looking indifferent to your existence. You do not bother it, remembering what your mom said about wasps – they sting like hell. You drift off to sleep when suddenly you feel a rush of pain on your belly and you see the wasp flying away. An immediate discomfort and heat swell up on your stomach and when you look at it, you see a big patch of swelling; A red, itchy and painfully swollen part of your stomach.

You have been stung by a wasp for no apparent reason! Inside your house! You curse the weather and you try not to cry while enduring the pain and look for medicine for your wasp sting.

Apparently, it is very common to see wasps inside your homes during the summertime, especially when ...
... the air is humid and the warmth of the air is just not warmth – it is hot. When you open your windows, you open your house to unexpected guests – insects and animals.

These unexpected guests host a significant number of creatures – birds, bees, raccoons, squirrels, your neighbor’s cat, even possums (if you live in the rural towns). The worst part is that it can also attract wasps. Wasps are territorial creatures. Once they feel that an area is substantial for their needs (warm, with abundant food supply) they build nests on it.

The nest inside my House?

Wasps are attracted to the smell of what they see as food (dead animals, insects, and your dinner). When they sense that the location has an abundance of it, they build nests near it. So your house, especially when you open your windows day and night during summertime, can attract the wasps.

When they smell food, they would never leave it alone. Because of their survival instincts, they would definitely live near the food source, which is why it is common to find a wasps nest in the kitchen or in the garbage area of your house.

Signs that there are Wasps inside Your House

One of the signs is that you see a wasp inside your house. Be it an individual wasp or a group of them, the mere existence of wasps inside your house is an indicator that there may be a nest inside your home.

Another is that wasps keep on getting on your garbage, just like flies. They tend to hover on decaying matter because it attracts more insects (their main food). Seeing wasps in your garbage is a sign that they may be living with you inside your home.

Where to Find Them?

Wasps can be seen eventually everywhere inside your home. They can be seen in corners, and tight spaces (like behind bookshelves, behind the refrigerator, etc). They can also build their nests on low activity areas, such as cabinets, drawers, the cupboard, and even the bathroom.

Most commonly, wasp nests can be seen in areas you would usually miss. The window is an example. You wouldn’t bother looking at it at first because you sense that you always move the shutters, so building a nest would not be beneficial for the wasps. But if you look closely and observe traces of what looks like gray cement, there is wasp activity there.

The door is also commonplace. At the back of the door lies an enormous life cycle of insects. The corners of your door from your wall are a specific place for any insect to stay at. Wasps can build on their spot and become territorial. If you do not want to get stung before leaving the house, or before going outside, check if there are any indications of wasp activity on your door.

How Not To Make Wasps Your Housemate

Prevention is better than removal, in the insect removal world. Always close your windows if the temperature is bearable enough. By opening the windows at all times, you are welcoming insects and other ‘guests’ inside your house. If they find your place suitable for their needs, you get an instant housemate.

Clean your spaces. The best thing to do in order to prevent any nest build-up is to regularly clean your place. Spot clean corners if you see it dusty or have traces of cement-like sand. This indicates that a colony of wasp is building their nest to move in with you. Always cover garbage cans and never leave rotting garbage in plain sight. Because air particles are better disseminated in our atmosphere, the smell can travel at long distances. Wasps can pick up this signal and may swarm your house to get to that glorious amount of garbage they call food.

Use insect repellent sprays around your house, especially if you live in suburban/rural areas. Because nature often makes these creatures feel that they own the world, they are bound to appear almost everywhere. Chemical sprays can actually eliminate their presence because the smell can send them a signal to back off. These chemical sprays are also inexpensive ways to prevent any kind of insect from pestering your peaceful life inside your homes.

Other options are for you to live in cold places because wasps are dormant during cold weather or to live away from plants, mainly because wasps and plants go together. But whatever you do, when you spot a wasp, never go near it, or move away. They can sting like hell, and they wouldn’t take any peaceful gestures. They will always attack whenever they feel like it.
