Poker - Third In A Series On The History Of The World Series Of Poker. Overview Of The 1973 World

People that watch poker have it really good in today's day and age. When watching a poker match today, you get to see the cards each player is holding. You can also go online to websites and follow along with the play hand by hand as the action happens. Back in 1973, this was not the case, but 1973 did mark a historic year in the poker world with the 1973 WSOP poker series.
The reason why the 1973 WSOP was such a historic event is that it was the first World Series of Poker that was televised. Prior to 1973, poker technology did not even exist at all. Because of the popularity of Amarillo Slim, the WSOP was videotaped for the first time ever. The taping was narrated by Jimmy The Greek Snyder and was a precursor for the classic ESPN poker telecasts that you can buy today.
Puggy Pearson was the 1972 WSOP runner up. Many suspected that Puggy dumped the championship to avoid publicity and tax issues that could have been created by winning. While there has never been a definitive answer, it seems that Slims claim to fame helped changed Pearson's attitude about being well known for winning a high stakes tournament. ...
... He was definitely in this tournament to win as he outlasted 11 other players to meet up with Johnny Moss.
Puggy definitely didn't back down from Johnny Moss, who had won the WSOP title twice. Puggy was aggressive and took down the Grand Old Man of poker. While most players always attribute their skill to winning, there is definitely a lot of luck that plays into it. Puggy had lady luck on his side in two different instances. Luck was on his side when he was outdrawn twice by Moss. Like a pro however, Puggy stayed in the game even when his chips were down and had a clear head. This caused Moss to make a big flop bet which Pearson called. When Moss was on the river, with three spades on the board, he fired at pearson and put Pearson all in. Pearson called Moss's bluff and won the pot!
Pearson won the whole thing with a high Ace. Puggy defeated the greatest player the game had to offer. We became the official champion of the 1973 World Series of Poker. The game finished up like this: Puggy Pearson won the $10,000 Championship Event and won $130,000, Bill Boyd won the Limit Five Card stud and took home $10,000, Joe Bernstein won the Limit Ace to 5 Draw and won $21,000, Puggy Pearson won the $4,000 limit seven card Stud and won $32,000, Sam Angel won the $1,000 Rass and won $32,000, Aubrey Day won the $3,000 Deuce to Seven Draw event and took home $16,500, Puggy also won the $1,000 no limit Hold'em and took home $17,000 and Jack Straus won the $3,000 Deuce To Seven Draw event for $16,500.
Puggy Pearson took his competition off the map by calling Moss's bluff and taking home the title of World Series of Poker Champion in 1973. The televised event led to a frenzy and rise in poker popularity, as well as rocketing Pearson to a new national popularity level.
