New Low-cost Iphone Will Begin Mass Production In February
People familiar with the matter said that Apple's suppliers plan to begin assembling new low-cost iPhones in February as the company hopes to address a wider range of the global smartphone market before launching 5G phones later this year.
A person familiar with the matter said that the Cupertino, California-based company is expected to officially launch the new phone as early as March. People familiar with the matter added that the assembly of the new phone will be split by Hon Hai Precision Industry, Pegatron and Wistron.
This will be the first low-cost iPhone model since the iPhone SE. According to Bloomberg, it will be similar to the iPhone 8 in 2017 and will be equipped with a 4.7-inch screen. The iPhone 8 is still on the market and currently costs $ 449, and Apple sold the iPhone SE for $ 399 when it launched the iPhone SE in 2016.
New phones are expected to have Touch ID built into the home screen buttons, reusing mature Apple technology instead of choosing to display a fingerprint sensor like most modern Android competitors. It won't pass Apple's Face ID biometric authentication, but will use the ...
... same processor as Apple's current flagship device, the iPhone 11.
It turns out that Apple's cheaper iPhones are popular with consumers, including the latest iPhone 11, which starts at $ 50 less than Apple's regular price. Two people familiar with the matter said that strong demand for the iPhone prompted Apple to ask Taiwan's semiconductor manufacturing company to make more chips this quarter.
Japan Display Inc., which provides LCD screens for Apple's low-end iPhones, closed up 1.35% on Wednesday.
According to Bloomberg, Apple is planning to release a series of new high-end iPhones later in 2020, including 5G connectivity, a faster processor and a new 3D camera on the back.
Cheaper products may help Apple better compete in the most competitive and fast-growing emerging phone markets, especially India. The iPhone is still working hard in the country, and the overpriced Android competitor costs less than $ 200, which makes the iPhone overwhelmed. Still, Apple has shown its willingness to serve its niche market and is looking for Apple stores in its territory.
The US technology giant hopes that its mobile phone shipments can resume growth this year, and has set a goal for itself to exceed 200 million units by 2020. The iPhoneSE successor will play an important role in this task.
