There is fun in being a solo backpacker. You get to travel the world on your terms. There is no one to disturb you, bug you or tell you what you should do and what you should not have done. On the contrary, you are your own boss. You can decide where to stay, how many days you would like to stay and so on. You are free to change the travel plan any moment you want. You don’t have to give justifications to anyone. There is no one you are accountable to and no one can ask you any question. Isn’t this liberating? The thought that you can do whatever you want, is tempting enough to make us venture out. However, when you are a solo backpacker it is important to keep the following things in mind. These are for your safety and security so that you don’t get caught on the wrong foot.

Once you have shortlisted the destination where you would like to travel, read up on the place as much as you can. Collect as detailed information as possible. This will prepare you for the worst.
Download maps of the place, especially transport maps so that you have an idea of the route. Even ...
... if you get lost you can still find you way back. There is no need to ask anyone anything. You have the map with you, that is enough. But if you want a double confirmation, you can always ask the locals to help you out.
Install the local cab app so that in times of need you can book a cab without any hassle.
Since you are a solo backpacker it is best to opt for homestays that offer bed and breakfast facility. They will be cheap on our pocket and you will get to enjoy freshly cooked home made breakfast every day of your stay. You can always opt for a hotel if you are not comfortable with a homestay. But the major idea behind backpacking trip is to soak in the local culture and heritage. And there is no better way than a homestay.
Don’t forget to try out the local cuisine, at least once. What people can cook and how integral food is to any society will amaze you is sure to amaze you.
Always carry enough cash with you so that you can pay on the spot. However divide your cash and keep it in several bags in your backpack. This is because even if anything happens and you luggage gets stolen or misplaced, you will always have some extra cash with you.
If you are planning to it the pub or disco in the evening make sure to double check neighborhood it is in. We don’t want you to get sloshed in an unknown area. If you are drinking, drink responsibly. You can always get sloshed back home. For that you don’t need to go on a solo-backpacking trip. It is better to be safe than to be sorry.
And always have one phone number in your speed dial. You never know when you need to call.
