The Annapurna Base Camp Trek, also popularly known as the ABC Trek is an adventure filled, moderately difficult trekking trail here. It is one of the few trekking trails that pass through the Annapurna Zone.
Besides the most splendid scenery that culminates with the views of small, erratic Himalayan villages and beautifully terraced farms, you will be treated with the grandeur of three of the 10 highest peaks around the world. Dhaulagiri I, the 7th highest peak at 8167 meters, Manaslu, the 8th highest at 8156 meters and the 10th highest, Annapurna at 8091 meters, together make for a treat to the eyes.
Any individual aged between 12 and 80 years who have an average level of physical fitness can easily take up the trek. The trek starts at Pokhara and several ...
... destinations are covered on the way. A side hike to Poon Hill is also a popular choice among many trekkers. It is famous for a stunning golden sunrise from Poon Hill that sheds its beauty on snow-covered Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massif.
Here are a few tips that are sure to make your trek to the Annapurna Base Camp more organized and memorable.
Tips for travelers trekking the ABC Trek
I. Make sure that all the permits that are required for the trek are in place. You can get them at the Nepal Tourism Board Office in Kathmandu or leave it on your tour operator to do the necessary formalities. For the ABC Trek, you will require a permit for the park, together with the TIMS permit.
II. Make it a point to plan your trek well ahead of time and also add a few extra days that might work as contingency days or you. You can also choose to use them to explore the capital city, Kathmandu or some other side hikes.
III. Do not forget to hydrate yourself. It will not just keep you healthy all during the trek but will also prevent you from AMS or altitude sickness. At the Annapurna Base Camp Trek, you will gain a maximum altitude of 13,779 feet that definitely involves the risk of AMS. So stay hydrated and keep altitude sickness away.
IV. Tea houses are the USP of Nepal treks and must not be missed at any cost. You will not just get fresh, hot meals and warm beds but also a dose of the local Sherpa culture. Do not miss this opportunity!
V. When trekking in Nepal, be open to do side hikes. For instance, while on the trail to Annapurna Base Camp Short Trek, you can do a side hike to Poon Hill. While this will increase the number of trek days to 10 but it is worth it. The beautiful sunrise from the Poon Hill spreads its gold on the snow covered Annapurna Massif and the Dhaulagiri Massif and it is a sight to behold!
If you are an adventure freak and like to explore the place all by yourself, you will be delighted to know that you can do the ABC Trek all by yourself, without needing a porter or a guide or a tour operator to plan it all for you. All you need is a little bit of research and a lot of planning ahead of time.
