How Gm Is Making A Comeback
It's been a tough couple of years for General Motors but some signs of hope are finally starting to appear on the horizon for the troubled U.S. auto giant.
After taking on the additional debt of 6.7 billion dollars in government loans, GM is already on the road to making amends. The automaker recently announced that they have already repaid 2.4 billion, with plans to pay the remainder by mid-summer. Much of the reason for GM's reversal of fortune lies in their new and upcoming varieties of automobiles. Sales of these new vehicles have lead to promising first-quarter numbers, and many industry insiders now believe that General Motors has a decent shot at turning a profit in 2010.
But how did GM start down the comeback trail? One significant factor was the company's decision to scale down and eliminate some of its brands. As a result, General Motors is now reduced to four brands: Cadillac, Chevy, Buick, and GMC. New vehicles are being introduced within these four remaining brands and already generating a bit of buzz:
2010 Buick Regal
Though the name of this mid-size sedan might be familiar, General ...
... Motors is giving the old standby a long overdue makeover for this mid-2010 release. The new Buick Regal is a sleek reworking of the traditional model, aimed at attracting a wider and younger customer-base than the model has enjoyed in years.
This sportier take on the Regal is patterned on the Opel Insignia. Opel is General Motors' German subsidiary, and the Insignia has proved to be a popular model. In 2009, GM introduced a new Opel Insignia-inspired Buick Regal in China to much acclaim. With such a great reception in Europe and China, the new Buick Regal has the potential to be a big hit in the States as well, reinvigorating the brand and boosting GM's comeback.
2010 Cadillac CTS Coupe
GM's latest entry into the world of luxury cars is also getting lots of attention. The sporty, two-door CTS employs most of the favorable features from the CTS sedan, and enhances things with renewed attention to interior refinement. And because there will always be a segment of the luxury market that is more interested in action than gas mileage, General Motors will also be introducing the CTS-V version, equipped with 556 horsepower and a supercharged V-8.
2011 Chevrolet Orlando
General Motors addresses the needs of the "post-SUV age" with this upcoming MPV (multi-purpose vehicle). Like the new Buick Regal, the Orlando is based on design elements of an already popular and proven European-market GM car, in this case the Opel Zafira. The Orlando manages to minimize fuel consumption while still maximizing the vehicle's interior space. This MPV can transport a maximum of seven adults, thanks to flat-folding second and third row seats.
2011 Chevrolet Spark
General Motors has high hopes for this stylish hatchback aimed at a young customer base. The futuristic design of the Spark, matched with its innovative, motorcycle-based instrument cluster, make for a unique, attractive and highly anticipated entry in the American market.
2011 Chevrolet Volt
Of all the new General Motors cars, the highest hopes seem to be pinned on the upcoming Chevy Volt. The Volt is a hybrid electric car and already hotly anticipated. Unlike many other hybrids, the Chevy Volt will not require a separate charging station and can easily plug into a residential electrical outlet.
A fully charged Volt will be able to travel about 40 miles. This distance encompasses the average daily commute for over 75 percent of Americans. This means that most Americans would be able to complete their weekly commute to work without needing to purchase gas.
With gas prices continuing to skyrocket, a convenient, reliable hybrid is likely to be a big hit with consumers. Add to that the fact that Volt owners will qualify for the biggest tax breaks available to hybrid owners ($7,500), and it's easy to understand why the Chevy Bolt is surrounded by so much optimism.
General Motors, in spite of its recent troubles, remains the largest auto manufacturer in the U.S. With its strides towards repaying its government loans, as well as a promising selection of new cars about to hit the market, GM is certainly poised for a comeback.
