There are several reasons for the popularity of the
Annapurna Base Camp Trek or the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek among the trekkers. The trek takes the trekkers to two different base camps — the Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) and the base camp, popularly known as the fish tail mountain — the Machhauchhare Base Camp. The mountain has never been summited since the local people worship it and also have a spiritual association with it.
The other reason is the mesmerizing Annapurna Sanctuary that sits beautifully in the laps of Mt. Annapurna and is considered one among the popular trekking destinations in the Khumbu region. Needless to mention, spectacular views from the base camp remain the top driving force for any trekker.
What makes it special?
The Annapurna Sanctuary Trek or the Annapurna Base Camp Trek is one of the best treks to rejuvenate you in a short period of time. The duration of the trek ranges from about 8 to 12 days but it gets you really close to some of the daunting mountain peaks including the Annapurna I and II and the ...
... Machapuchare at the Annapurna Base Camp.
While the entire trekking journey is beautiful, one can witness some unforgettable mountain scenery in the heart of the Annapurna Sanctuary. There are several peaks in the sanctuary that are about 20,000 feet or so and are responsible for contributing to the beauty and grandeur of the trek. These are Hiunchuli, Annapurna South, Annapurna I, Annapurna II, III and IV, Khangsha Kang, Tarke kang, Gangapurna and the iconic and spiritually significant Machapuchare.
The best time to Trek
The best times to take up the trek are from October to December that forms the fall peak season and March and April that is the Spring trekking season there. These are the best times since the sky is clear during the mornings and the evenings and one gets to witness clearly visible starry skies at night and towering mountains with snow-covered peaks during the mornings.
Starting the Trek
The trekkers need to drive for 45 minutes from Pokhara to Phedi. It is from here that the trek begins. The trek is a beautiful journey that literally takes you to a totally different world with lush green forests of rhododendron that are blooming with flowers, the small and compact Gurung villages that will not cease to fascinate you, and picturesque river valleys with the postcard-worthy Annapurna and Dhaulagiri in the backdrop. After you have explored the Annapurna sanctuary, the trek concludes at Nayapul.
Accommodation
The major form of accommodation on the trail of
Annapurna base camp short trek is the Tea Houses. These are run by the locals and offer all the basic facilities to the trekkers visiting the place. The tea house serves authentic, Nepali dishes that are light for the body, yet sumptuous. If you are looking for facilities such as a hot shower, you might have to pay a little extra.
The normal price of accommodation ranges from anywhere between $2 to $5 per night but it can go up depending on the altitude, nature of accommodation and the time of the year you are travelling.
While the trek is a beautiful journey to the Annapurna Base Camp, it is good to know a few little-known things about it. A major part of the trek is an up and back trek, the increase in the elevation is much faster and thus, acclimatization must be taken seriously. It is advisable to follow the basic trekking rules and go by what your guide, porter or the locals suggest.
