If you are a mountaineering enthusiast, inevitably, exploring the mighty Everest will be on your list. However, Mount Everest's exploration until a few years ago was left only for the experts in the field.
With the advent of the tourism boom and many alternative trails and routes strewn all over the Himalayas, reaching the Everest Base Camp is now not an impossible dream. At an elevation of 5400 meters, it is the final stop that a non-professional hiker can reach.
Everest Base Camp trek is 130 km long and generally requires 11 to 14 days to complete if 9 to 12 km are traveled each day. Every year around 25,000 brave men and women take up the challenge of reaching the Everest Base Camp, and over 95% of them actually succeed.
The challenges and difficulties of the EBC trek -
Graded as a moderately severe trekking route, EBC Trek is more strenuous on the body than being difficult in technicality. The uphill climb combined with the higher altitude makes its a slow ascend.
Acclimatization at a regular interval of a few hundred meters is essential to prevent shock or altitude sickness. The oxygen level ...
... reaches to a bare minimal of 60% at the final summit point. Without proper acclimatization, it is impossible to complete the trek.
Even though extreme professional level fitness is not essential for the EBC trek, it is necessary to have good stamina and stiff limbs, at least to make the trek easier for your body. A few days a week at the gym from 3 months before the trek, building up your core strength and stamina is perfect preparation.
Quick Packing Guide for EBC Trek -
The first and foremost point to remember while packing for the trek is to carry as little as possible and travel light. The additional weight is a considerable obstacle on the route of the trek. Packing smartly is also based on the weather condition at the time of the trek.
A summarized detail of what to pack on the route the EBC trek will help in making your travel much more manageable and comfortable
The Bag - It is mandatory to avoid carrying duffel bags, trolleys, and suitcases while going on a trek. The ideal and best-suited travel bag for the journey is a backpack. It is easier to carry and much more lightweight. AN additional rain cover will ensure that the bag is protected against rain and snow on the trail.
The Shoes - Investing in excellent quality and sturdy shoes is the top priority while hiking. A right shoe will have a sturdy grip, high sole, waterproofing structure, and will also have an excellent thermal induction capacity besides being comfortable and lightweight. Slippers and other fancy shoes are a complete no.
The clothing - A thermal jacket is the first clothing needed for the trek and followed by a few warm layers inside. Fleece is best suited for any harsh weather. Thermocot lower and upper wear is the basics that every trekker should have. The trail to the base camp can be chilling, and the freezing water may not be viable for washing clothes. SO carrying a few pairs of undergarments are also important.
The Gears - Everest base camp trek does not have any technical undercuts or trails that require additional mountaineering gears. However, it is essential to carry necessary trek gears like goggles, warm beanie hat, a thick pair of gloves, and earmuffs. This will help you to protect your eyes, head, and face from the harsh chilling weather and frostbite.
The health supplements - Dehydration and altitude sickness is a grave situation commonly seen during this trek. To prevent such incidents from occurring, carrying a water bottle and sipping water at regular intervals is essential. Besides hydration, energy is also a critical necessity. Protein bars, chocolates, and glucose should be carried along to have at regular intervals. These will not only ensure that you have sufficient energy to burn but also act as fillers and prevent hunger.
