Federal and global regulations by law require chemical manufacturers and importers to obtain or develop a material safety data sheet (MSDS) for each hazardous chemical they produce or import. Employers are required to have a material safety data sheet in the workplace for each hazardous chemical that is used. For companies who are unaware or not up-to-date with the current regulations, MSDS software is a key tool in MSDS authoring which will alleviate stress when creating material safety data sheets and templates.
According to the Occupational Safety and Hazard Administration (OSHA) which is based in the Unites States, each material safety data sheet must be in English, although the employer may obtain copies in other languages as well. Global requirements may vary, which is why MSDS software is an important tool.
OSHA has very specific requirements pertaining to MSDS authoring, in order to keep companies and employees safe. Templates must contain all of OSHA's requirements in order for the material safety data sheet to be valid in the United States. According to OSHA, MSDSs must also contain the physical and chemical characteristics of the hazardous chemical such as vapor pressure, flash point, etc., and the physical hazards of the hazardous chemical which including the potential for fire, explosion, and reactivity. In addition, the health warnings or concerns of the hazardous chemical, including signs and symptoms of exposure, must be on the MSDS sheet, and any medical conditions which are generally recognized as being aggravated by exposure to the chemical.
Other important compliance issues to note when MSDS authoring, are the need to incorporate any applicable precautions for safe handling and use (which are known to the chemical manufacturer), as well as the OSHA permissible exposure limit, and ACGIH Threshold Limit Value. Appropriate hygienic practices, protective measures during repair and maintenance of contaminated equipment, and procedures for clean-up of spills and leaks must also be present n all material safety data sheets when MSDS authoring.
In addition to chemical properties, characteristics, and safety information, the name, address and telephone number of the chemical manufacturer, importer, employer and/or other responsible party who is responsible for preparing or distributing the material safety data sheet, must be present on the sheets as well. MSDS software will allow this information to be added to a template, to avoid multiple re-written copies and potential errors.
MSDS software is designed to comply with federal regulations, including OSHA. Attempting to perform MSDS authoring without a current system or application may cause problems with federal compliance and may potentially decrease productivity and result in loss of profits for the business.
