As I walked down the hall, I wondered , why would someone want me to come to the guidance office? As I stepped into the counseling office, I was met by a girl who needed to speak to someone about her friend. I was reassured by the school counselor that I was not in trouble and that someone needed to talk with me. I was called because I was a member of the Breakfast Club.The Breakfast Club is not a 'club where one eats breakfast. It is an organization of students started thirteen years ago as a result of a young student s suicide. His mother thought that it could have been prevented had her son talked to someone about how he was feeling.The B.C., as we call it for short, gives us an opportunity to privately talk to our peers about anything on their minds and in their hearts. Our motto: We care but we don't cure. Members from the previous year, teachers, and counselors select students for the Breakfast Club. The club is a diverse group including Asians, blacks, whites, athletes, ...
... musicians, and students with all levels of academic achievement. The criteria for belonging to the group is to be a good listener, be able to brainstorm? ideas, and not give advice! We barely knew one another in the beginning, but we became fast? friends after all the training and experiences we went through.The call led me to a one-on-one? meeting with the girl who had asked me down to the office. It seems that she had found her friend cutting her wrists. I called the counselor into the room because it' s important to have an adult involved when a life is in danger, and she took the student out of her classroom.That' s when I found out that she was cutting herself because she didn't care about her life, and though no one would care if she was gone. She had many problems at home, and recently her grandparents had come to stay with her family. They had made her feel horrible with negative comments directed at her. Her grades weren't the best either, and she didn't get the attention and love she needed at home from her parents.Just like the boy who had committed suicide years before, she was very good at putting on a happy mask -without anyone suspecting that she was depressed. Fortunately, the Breakfast Club was there to help her, confidentially. She and I, and sometimes the counselor, met many times during the year following that phone call to my classroom, and we talked about what was bothering her.After school was out for the summer, I received a call from her. I asked how her summer was going, and she told me it was great. She had gotten all A' s and B' s on her report card. Somehow we got into a conversation about popularity. She told me that she was going to be who she wanted to be from now on, and her true friends were the friends that would stick by? her no matter what. We also talked about the future and what to expect in high school this fall.I have a great feeling that I played a positive role in her life. I wasn't an advice giver, .but I was someone she could count on to talk with because I listened. I hope I helped her realize that life is definitely worth living.
