Have you ever noticed sharp bite marks on your sofa? Have you ever see garbage scattered in the kitchen or pantry? Have you ever experienced difficulty in sleeping and severe itching? These are just a few of the many problems that pests cause. Most of the pests are very small and hard to detect, so even if you think that your place is free of pests, it might be not.

What are some of the common pests?

We encounter many pests in our daily living. Let us take a look at a few common pests and what harm can they cause.

Ants – These insects though are small, but pose a big threat. Ants are attracted by food smells and moisture. If you see a colony of ants regularly at your place, it probably means ant infestation somewhere. Ants can contaminate food and can also carry different types of bacteria that can cause infections, allergies, etc. They can damage wood, containers, etc. The bite of ants can be very painful and can cause skin infections.

Rodents – Rats and mice are found almost everywhere. Rodents are attracted to food smells, spilled liquids, food-related garbage, etc. Their sharp teeth can cause ...
... damage to furniture, doors, and windows. They can easily destroy plastic food containers, carpets, and anything that can be chewed. If not controlled, rodents can contaminate food and cause infections, allergies, and dangerous diseases.

Mosquitoes – Malaria, dengue, etc. are some of the deadly diseases caused by mosquitoes as they can contaminate human blood with viruses. The most definite place where mosquitoes breed is the area where there is unclean water. Unclean and stagnant water could be present in your bucket which has not been used in a long time, pool, grass coolers, garden, etc. Mosquitoes are also present in the dense bushes and thrive in hot weather. Mosquitoes can multiply many folds and can cause serious health and skin problems.

Flies – Flies are common everywhere. They can easily contaminate food as they feed on decaying food. They carry bacteria which can lead to stomach and other infections.

Termites – Termites can destroy your precious wood assets like furniture, bed, wooden shelves, doors, windows, and cupboards. Mostly, you will come to know about the termites after a certain period when the damage had already been done. The affected wood should be immediately discarded, and the surrounding area should be quickly isolated and treated. Termites can get transferred to other places and can cause more damage. Not only this, but termites can also damage books, papers, plants, etc. They are attracted by moisture, dead plants or trees, and wooden things.

Cockroaches – Cockroaches are another common type of pests present. Cockroaches like humid conditions and prefer dark places. Mostly, they are found near the garbage and drain areas where they can search for food. They can contaminate food, which can lead to allergies and infections.

Clothes Moths – Clothes moths feed on carpets, clothes, etc. They can chew their way and damage clothes, carpets, drapes, etc. You will find moths infestation in furniture, vents, etc. and they are good breeding places for them.

Bed bugs – Bed bugs feed on human blood at night. They can cause severe itching, skin allergies, infections, and to some extent contamination of the blood. They are generally transmitted when things are shifted from their infested area to some other place.

What are the different methods and precautions that can be taken for pest control?

The pest control methods have evolved, and today we can control almost any type of pests. Let us focus on some of the precautions and methods which we can implement ourselves to control pests.

First and foremost, you need to keep your home, office, hotel rooms, etc. clean. Carpets, walls, spaces behind and under the furniture, curtains, wardrobe, etc. should be vacuumed regularly.

Clean any areas with stagnant and unclean water. Dispose of things like stale food, garbage, etc. as they invite pests.

Make sure there is no water or moisture near the wooden materials and structures.

Keep food, grains, sugary food, etc. always in airtight containers and away in a place where pests cannot attack.

Keep your clothes safely in the wardrobe, and lock it when not needed. Also, clean the wardrobe and wash clothes on a regular basis. Inspect the clothes for any damage regularly.

Make sure you keep the doors, windows, and vents shut if you sense mosquitoes and flies.

Make use of common “off the shelf” products like mothballs, repellent creams, sticky traps, chemical sprays, fly swatters, etc. to repel pests. Mint, neem, garlic, lime juice, etc. are some natural remedies for repelling pests.

If there are hanging branches or dense bushes in your area, cut or trim them as soon as possible so that pests do not infiltrate.

Seal any gaps and cracks on the walls, doors, windows and wherever you feel there are chances of pests entering the house. This method will be helpful against ants, rodents, and cockroaches.

Clean any liquid or food spills immediately as it can attract pests.

For safety, a layer of metal plating can be added to the doors, windows, and vents, especially on the edges. This can help in keeping the rodents out.

Why professional help is still needed?

The precautionary methods mentioned above can be effective in controlling and repelling pests for a certain period, maybe a few days or just a few hours. These methods cannot eliminate the pests, and thus you will still have to be cautious about any pest infestation. Also, performing and implementing these methods can be tricky and time-consuming for you. Factors like the correct product to be used, its volume, etc. are some of the things to be considered, and also you will need to have the right skills and proper knowledge of tackling the pests.

Ultimately, you will have to go for professional pest control services. If you do not eliminate pests, they can cause serious problems. The following are the issues or side effects of not using professional pest control services, which cannot be taken care of by precautionary methods.

· Contamination of food leading to infections, food poisoning, etc.
