Parents of children who wet the bed, and adults who are suffering from nocturnal enuresis, now have a number of options for assisting in the change of behavioral patterns necessary to counter these conditions. Those who suffer from nocturnal enuresis, whether as children or adults, experience a full bladder but do not respond appropriately to the sensation. Instead, they tend to sleep through the feeling which ultimately results in bladder leakage, or in sometimes unconscious emptying of the entire bladder.

This condition presents numerous issues. It can result in continuous soiling of linens, blankets, and other bedding materials, including mattresses. Urine is not an easy smell to remove and many pieces of bedding must be discarded, especially when soiled repeatedly. The replacement of bedding materials and mattresses can become expensive over a short period of time.

Further investment is often required in methods to protect mattresses from being soiled. Bed pads designed to soak up and hold urine, preventing it from reaching the mattress or the individual's skin are costly. High quality bed pads that work ...
... best are very pricey, and can quickly add significant expense to dealing with nocturnal enuresis.

In addition to the increased maintenance concerns and the associated cost, nocturnal enuresis presents a health concern as well. Not only can it affect those who suffer from it on a physical level, but on an emotional level too.

The physical concerns associated with nocturnal enuresis include the development of urine scald or skin irritation due to exposure to the acids present in urine. Of course, the continued exposure over time can have much more severe affects, and result in extremely painful areas of irritation and even infection.

Remaining in such conditions is unsanitary at the very least. However, many who suffer from nocturnal enuresis are entirely unaware that they have emptied their bladders. Many remain asleep for hours at a time and sometimes the entire night, only to wake and find that they are in these conditions.

The emotional effects of nocturnal enuresis on the individual can be as significant, if not more so, than the physical effects suffered. Children who wet the bed are often ashamed and initially try to hide it from their parents. If parents react poorly to the problem, children are even more likely to internalize the associated stigma and develop additional emotional and psychological concerns as a result.

For this reason, parents should treat the problem as one to be dealt with and one which can be overcome. Children need to see the problem as a challenge they can face and win. Finding tools to help children in their battle is an essential step in providing them with the right mindset to tackle the problem. Bedwetting alarms are one such tool that can be employed.

Bedwetting alarms are electronic, containing sensors which alert the wearer when their bladder releases. These alarms contain a moisture sensor which recognizes the presence of even small amounts of liquid. When liquid is detected, the sensor triggers an alarm to sound. The alarm awakens the wearer who can then respond to the issue at hand which is the need to empty their bladder.

Dependent upon the severity of the nocturnal enuresis, the individual's bladder may leak or rapidly empty. In cases where the bladder rapidly empties, bedwetting alarms may sound at that appropriate time but the wearer may still be faced with a real mess upon waking.

Regardless of how severe the nocturnal enuresis may be, bedwetting alarms can still aid in correcting the problem. Individuals who wear them begin to hone their own ability to better sense the need to wake and empty their bladders. They are able to make stronger sensory connections over time, recognizing the signs of a full bladder even when unconscious. In other words, these alarms help train the bodies of individuals on how to recognize and understand their own internal communications.

Bedwetting alarms are available in several styles, including wireless alarms, pad alarms, and wearable alarms. Wearable alarms allow the moisture sensor to be attached to the pajamas or underwear, and connect to the alarm unit via a cord which can be worn under the shirt of the child. Wireless alarm sensors also attach to the underwear or pajamas but they do not require a corded connection to the alarm unit. The connection is established digitally instead.

Pad alarms do not require any sensor to be attached to a wearer. They utilize the same basic technology as the other styles but the sensor is contained within a bed pad on which the individual rests while sleeping. At the slightest sensing of moisture, the alarm will sound, waking the individual and alerting them to the problem.
