The attributes of a normal tongue is pink in color protected by small nodules called papillaes. At some point or another persons will experience spots showing up on the tongue. The spots can be caused by things like; smoking, trauma, stress, tongue ulcer, burning tongue syndrome and infections like oral thrush, oral lichen Lanus and leukoplakia.

Too much smoking can cause the tongue becoming inflamed and producing spots on the tongue. Trauma may cause a person to bite their tongue which can cause sores and spots to appear on the tongue. Tongue ulcers, medically called aphthous ulcer is also a common reason for spots to appear on the tongue. When this happens, white spots can be identified on the tongue. Tongue ulcers can happen through various situations such as eating excessive amounts of spicy food, brushing the teeth in the incorrect way that irritates the top coating that protects the tongue, not eating at the appropriate intervals during the day.

... may also inflame the tongue and cause ulcers also. Shortly before experiencing menopause women can also develop burning tongue syndrome which makes the tongue sense a burning sensation which causes inflammation leading to spots arising on the tongue.

Oral thrush is considered as a yeast infection which can affect the tongue by generating creamy white spots brushing or scraping these spots only further irritate them and lead to slight bleeding. Oral lichen planus forms white patches on the tongue but is usually found in persons individuals who are middle aged. These spots can last for years if they it is chronic but the break out of spots can be minimized if persons cut down their alcohol and tobacco intake. If the oral lichen planus is serious then medication such as mouth washes and immunosuppressants may be required to rid the mouth of the spots.

Leukoplakia is also recognized by white spots on the tongue which happens when cells in the tongue develope and form out into spots. However, the exact cause of this ailment is not understood but can be especially identified in individuals who smoke tobacco plenty.
