If you’re in need of an air conditioning solution and you have an existing space without air ducts all is not lost. Ductless air conditioners can often be retrofitted into buildings that have ductless heating systems where a central air conditioning system is not viable. Ductless air conditioning is also known as split system air conditioning because it has two main components; an indoor fan used to disperse air and an outdoor compressor and condenser which cools the air and removes condensation. A series of lines running between the indoor and out door components drain the condensation and also house the refrigerant tubing, suction tubing and electricity. While split system air conditioning is usually designed to cool a single room they have a number of advantages and applications in multi-dwelling and commercial spaces.

What are the advantages of split system air conditioning?

Retrofitting split system air conditioning in your building has a number of advantages over installing traditional wall units:

• The installation and maintenance cost of split system air conditioning ...
... is generally much lower because you avoid the expense of installing and maintaining ductwork
• Ductless air conditioners can run on a thermostat which increases their cost effectiveness and energy efficiency
• Rather than pumping cool air into empty rooms ductless air conditioning pumps air directly into the rooms you want
• Ductless air conditioning is generally quieter than traditional window and wall installed units and don’t require as large an opening to install
• Ductless air conditioners are small in size and more flexible than traditional units
• Split system air conditioning can have up to four rooms connected to one unit
• There is no need to remove ductless air conditioners during the winter months
• Split system air conditioning is generally easier to install. Often only a 3-inch hole in the wall is needed to hook up ductless air conditioners
• An outdoor ductless air conditioning component can be installed up to 50 feet from the indoor unit allowing for much greater flexibility of placement
• Ductless air conditioning can be up to 30% more efficient than a ducted system because of the energy loss from leaky and clogged ducts
• Split system air conditioning allows for greater flexibility with indoor placement. There are floor-standing ductless air conditioners as well as units which can be mounted from the wall or ceiling
• Split system air conditioning can provide more security against intrusion because they require a smaller hole to install

There are some disadvantages to split system air conditioning. The initial investment can be twice as much for a ductless air conditioner than a traditional unit. But you are likely to re-coop the savings in reduced energy cost over time. Improperly installed ductless air conditioning can also cause short cycling and lead to increased energy costs. So be sure to hire an experienced team that can help you choose and retrofit the right ductless air conditioning system for your space.
