When you entered this giant open-air market inspired by a similar seasonal tradition in Nuremberg, Germany, you have not witnessed the holidays in Chicago. Guests can shop handmade items such as nutcrackers, cuckoo clocks, beer steins and glass ornaments at Christkindlmarket. Nibble on potato pancakes, hot pretzels, schnitzel, döner, and treats covered with chocolate when hunger strikes. And no trip to Christkindlmarket is full without Glühwein's steaming mug, a traditional warm spiced wine (for the children, too, there is hot cocoa).

Meeting every Friday from November 29 to December 20, the caroling is being conducted by the likes of the Good Sounds! Choir (November 29), Mark Hubbard and The Voices (Dec 6), Chicago Children's Choir (Dec 13) and Choral Singers Wicker Park (Dec 20). It's free to attend, and if you want to go for a fast skate after performing, it's just a short walk to the McCormick Tribune Ice Rink.

Skate under the skyline of Chicago and in front of the Chicago Christmas Tree at Millennium Park's McCormick Tribune Ice Rink. The entrance to the rink is free and skates can be rented for $13–$15. The most famous time to hit the rink is at night, so if you don't feel like waiting in line to get your chance to slide around, show up earlier. Benefit from free skating lessons at 11 am on Fridays and at 9 am on Saturdays and Sundays. If skating seems too dry, call ahead — this rink will be open until March 8, allowing the weather.

Ant to ride Santa's rails? From November 29 to December 23, the CTA's Holiday Train brings cars filled with decorations, ribbons and holiday cheer to each single train line in the region. If you're fortunate, you're going to spot the train and take a picture, but if you're really smart, you could score a seat on the most festive public transportation style. Check the website of the CTA for a complete Holiday Train schedule and don't forget to wave in Santa if you see it zooming through.

In the Walnut Room, the seventh-floor restaurant inside Macy's (formerly known as Marshall Fields), you'll have to wait a while to get a seat next to the tree. But the 45-foot-tall tree that shines with 3,000 ornaments and 6,000 LED lights can be seen from outside the restaurant, meaning you won't have to splurge for a chicken pot pie just to experience one of the city's most spectacular vacation displays
