The Liverpool Experience

The city of Liverpool has had a massive change in identity in recent years, changing from what was once an 80s wasteland to an uber cool modern city. Tourism has blossomed, and now more people than ever before are flocking to this new city for weekend breaks.
The culmination of this change was the city being crowned European Capital of Culture for 2008. Many in Britain were flabbergasted, unable to reconcile their own outdated view of the city (as an 80s wasteland) with a city capable of such success. People started visiting out of curiosity.
Truth be told, this was not a simple overnight change. The city has been growing back ever since the early 90s when it started to get back on its feet after the economic misery that it was dealt under the 1980s Thatcher government.
Where once you could only find wastelands, broken down factories and crumbling buildings there are now parks, shopping centres, office blocks and hotels. Congested inner city areas have been closed off and pedestrianized, making it a much more pleasant place. Basically, the city has had a makeover.
Then the city got serious. Already ...
... well placed on the tourist map for people who went to the city to see the place the Beatles were from ? the Cavern club and the Albert Hall Beatles'' Experience are famous the world over ? the city decided that it wanted to take things to the next level.
It started to advertise what else the city had to offer; the maritime history of the place, the cultural areas, the impressive architecture of the cathedrals and its geographical proximity to other attractions. In this way it began to model itself as the ideal place for a weekend break.
This was a canny move as weekend breaks were only just coming into existence as a viable form of holiday. Whereas previously holidays were a once every year for two weeks affair, the internet now made it possible for flights and trains to cities just for a long weekend cheap enough.
And Liverpool was right at the forefront of this movement. Nowadays you can get a Liverpool Hotel through a budget internet travel company like Octopus Travel for example, for as little as ?50 a night if you stay right in the city centre. Flights are equally cheap. And thus the tourists keep flocking there. And it is well worth the visit.
