Nus Business School Alumni Association To Celebrate 20th Anniversary In 2020
The National University of Singapore Business School Alumni Association (NUSBSA) is the alumni body that collectively represents all graduates of NUS Business School’s various academic programmes. Since the school was started in 1965, more than 38,000 have graduated from the Business School or its predecessor institutions . Made up of volunteers who graduated from the NUS Business School from Bachelors to Masters and Post-Graduate programmes, the NUSBSA provides opportunities for alumni to strengthen relationships with each other, the school and the community, with the aim of opening up a world of possibilities for personal and professional growth.
Among the various activities that the association organises are intellectually stimulating talks like the CEO Unplugged Series, undergraduates and young alumni interactions like Youth Connexxion, giving back opportunities like the well-participated Bizad Charity Run and community projects with organisations such as YMCA Singapore. The NUSBSA is also a voice within the business community on subjects of contemporary interest such as corporate governance and social responsibility ...
... through conducting Continued Professional Education (CPE) talks for accountants. In 2015, the Women's Wing was formed to cater programmes for the women within the alumni community to connect, support and inspire each other.
“A robust alumni association works closely with the university to ensure continuity and opportunities for alumni to interact with the school. This provides immense benefits for students and the school to receive experience, knowledge and connections of their predecessors. At the same time, alumni who benefited from the Business School education will be able to share their learnings to help students do better for their own futures – always a meaningful and fulfilling endeavour,” says Tan Boon Chin, presiding President of the NUSBSA.
2020 marks the 20th year of the Association’s founding. The first in the series of alumni events to commemorate this significant milestone is the Bizad Charity Run in January, coincidentally in its 10th year. The annual Bizad Charity Run raises funds for a selected charity every year. Last year the run raised SGD 380,000 for the NUSBSA Bursary Fund and Touch Community Services – Elderly Care. Beneficiaries in the past include Cerebral Palsy Alliance Singapore (CPAS) (2018), Food Bank (2017), Autism Research Centre (ARC) (2016), Muscular Dystrophy Association Singapore (MDAS) (2015) and Boys Town (2015). The run will be followed by the bi-annual NUSBSA Reunion Dinner in March.
The flagship event of the anniversary celebrations will be the BSA’s first-ever reunion event on the grounds of the Business School in June, fondly named Picnic in the (car)Park. The picnic will be held in the parking area in front of the Hon Sui Sen Memorial Library, a central meeting point for business school undergrads since its completion in 1987.
“We decided on a picnic because we wanted the event to be accessible, where alumni can bring their families, or classmates may gather to reminisce their tertiary years. Of paramount importance was to have the event on the grounds of the Business School because over 50 years, the school has transformed and built new facilities to accommodate its growing needs. Many alumni may not have returned for years, and they will be excited to see the school’s progress and development,” says Jeannette Chan, Chairperson of the Picnic in the (car)Park. The Picnic will start with a school tour, show off the musical talents of its alumni over the years and end off with a mass song and dance segment, reminiscent of Freshmen Orientation Camps.
The picnic will be followed by two final events in September - Youth Connexxion by the NUSBSA Youth Wing and the NUS Business School Alumni Golf Reunion Challenge.
“We encourage our alumni to return and seek ways of being a part of the family of Business School graduates, to open up opportunities for themselves and others,” adds Chua Hung Meng, Vice-President of the association and Chairperson of the 20th Anniversary Committee. “The association’s volunteer team will be doubling their volunteer time in order to organise all the events we have planned, and any help will be appreciated.”
