sealant is a chemical product that is widely used in industrial applications. It is a mechanical seal that is mostly used to fill gaps, opening and cracks that may cause leakage of gas, liquid and other forms of matter. Generally, when two or more parts are joined together, gaps are most likely to occur and this is when sealants come in use to fill the gaps. Also, industrial sealants are no alternative to adhesive rather some sealants have adhesive properties.

Types of Industrial Sealants

According to the current industry standard, there are more than forty different types of industrial sealants available in today’s market. However, not every type of sealants are widely used and the following list discusses five of the most used types of sealants throughout industries:

Polymer-based sealants:

The group of products that include polyamide, polysulfide, polyester, vinyl and polyurethane sealants are known as polymer-based sealants. Their key features include forming permanently flexible seals that make them suitable for use in locations that require expansion joints. They are widely used while joining ...
... the bridge and also for brickwork.

Phenolic Sealants:

The sealant that is made from combining formaldehyde and phenol sealants are known as phenolic sealants. It is one of the best sealants that are not only used to seal joints but provide effective bonding. Their key feature is the ability to resist extreme temperature. Phenolic sealants are extensively used in the appliance industry, constructing buildings and joining plywood.

Epoxy sealants:

This type of sealant is known for its robust bonding property and hence when you sought for extreme toughness, there can be no alternative to epoxy sealants. Such type is created by a two-component system that is mixed together before application. Because of the excellent adhesive properties they can be used as a contact adhesive. Mostly epoxy sealants are used in the marine and aviation industries for their strong bonding abilities. They also work great for bonding electronic items.

Acrylic Sealants:

Such kind of industrial sealants is produced by acrylic acid through a catalytic reaction. One of the best features of this sealant is that they eliminate every kind of infiltration caused by foreign particles. Also, acrylic sealants have good bonding properties and also they are flexible, paintable and fragrance-free. The most common application of this category includes sealing window frames, doors, etc. They can also be used for other domestic purposes.

Silicone-based sealants:

If any sealant is acknowledged for its versatile features, it has to be silicone-based sealants. There are two types of silicone-based sealants- acetoxy and neutral care. The life expectancy of this sealant is ten to twenty years and also it’s quite affordable. The sealing solutions that are silicone-based are tough yet waterproof. Such sealant can be used for bonding tiles and can be used as an alternative to any other floor adhesive. They are also known for their heat and chemical resistance qualities. Apart from these uses, silicone-based sealants can be used for various other purposes. They can seal electric sealant and at the same time can also be used to glaze a structural sealant.

Curing Industrial Sealants

Another important step that is necessary before the application of industrial sealants is curing. This procedure hardens the sealants to its final shape and also strength. While there are different types of the curing process, it depends on the type of usage. Some industrial; sealants may require weeks to be cured while some completely harden in a few minutes. The main types of curing industrial sealants are listed below-

Ambient temperature

UV Radiation

Thermal Curing

Anaerobic Curing
