This is an interview that is between the employee, who has resigned and a member from the Human Resource department. Every employee who has resigned, or is laid off, has to face this procedure. The HR asks few questions to the employee and takes the notes.

The idea behind this interview is to collect information from the employee for the improvement of the work conditions and the policies of the company pertaining to the employee benefit, and measures to be taken to drop the rate of attrition. The secret behind the interview is also to turn the employee away and help the employer from indulging any legal actions. The notes taken by the HR can be used against you in the court if you go to Court against the employer.

You have all the rights to say 'No' for the exit interview. A good Company will respect your decision, but if the Company does not respect your decision, then it might say you were unwilling to participate in the interview. They might record 'no rehire' in your records and may disclose the same thing while the background checks.
Therefore, to decide whether to go for the Exit interview ...
... or not is your own decision. Yet, there are many different opinions about this. Many of the experts in the career think that you must attend the interview. However, it is of no great help, but for some employers it really helps to improve the working conditions of the Company and the other employers.

Nevertheless, some of the experts do not find it useful. It is useful when the employee is on the verge of leaving the company and not when he is about to leave the company. They think there is no risk for the departing employee. The candidates if attending the interview should give generic answers and respond after thinking and with care. The risk for the leaving employee is the data of the vital information going to the wrong person, spoiling the references that would give negative feedback in the reference check or the background check. The employer might submit this as optimistic or negative info as proof in some case.

There are few things that a person should consider well, before and at the time of exit interview. As an exiting employee, would you be really benefited from the interview? If yes then what are the benefits you are going to get. Would the HR report or the questionnaire going to be signed by you or not. What is the reason for you leaving the company? Is it personal or some issues related to the company? Will your opinion or suggestions be used for further improvements in the company? There is a possibility that this interview might affect the relations between the company and the employer that would in turn influence the reference check.

With all these possibilities in mind, you can take a decision of the answers you are going to give. There are many more tips about job interview or job search tips on our website. For more details, visit Save My Job.
