Amongst my friends, I was the only non-adventure junkie and I was ready to change that. I wanted my own stories to narrate and my own adventures to experience. I had always admired the beauty of the mountains, and the idea of trekking a summit had always been on my mind. I decided once and for all to take up a trekking adventure.

My best friend, who has been on quite a few treks suggested a list of easy treks that I could undertake and the one that caught my eye was the McLeodganj to Triund trek. The mountains of Himachal Pradesh are truly a sight to behold, and I heard that it’s a great place to start solo travel.

I booked a solo McLeodganj to Triund trek trip with a trusted operator (suggested by my bff), bought the necessary equipment, packed my bags and I was ready to go. I also did some jogging for a few weeks before, but then I met people on the trek who had not practiced anything.

Itinerary
Day 1: Delhi to Mcleodganj

I was picked up from Vidhan Sabha Metro Station in a private vehicle and prepared for an overnight journey to Mcleodganj.

Day 2: Mcleodganj and Bhagsu sightseeing

I ...
... checked into my hotel in Mcleodganj and hungrily gobbled down some yummy breakfast, then set off to sightsee. I was really enjoying solo travelling – for the first time, I could take my time with things and I certainly did not have to wait for anyone. Mcleodganj had a certain magic to it. It was dotted with lovely monasteries and quaint cafes at every bend against enchanting views of the mountains. Tibetan monks roamed the streets, giving it a lovely and spiritual vibe. I sat down at one cosy cafe, sipping tea and admired the spectacular views, and read a book peacefully. It was a real luxury.

I then set off to explore the Namgyal Monastery. It is the largest Tibetan temple outside of Tibet and every inch of it was magnificent. I felt so much peace when I was in the monastery.

After the monastery exploration, I set off to see Bhagsu Waterfall and temple. The walk to Bhagsu from Mcleodganj was easy and offered some stunning views. The Bhagsu temple is famous for its pools that are believed to have healing properties.

From the temple, I walked to the Bhagsu waterfall. As I went higher, the walk became a little scary but the beauty and serenity of the waterfall was enough to push me to the top.

Needless to say, I took a thousand pictures of the Bhagsu waterfall.

Day 3: Mcleodganj to Triund trek begins

After breakfast, I met my group and we began our trek.

I started from the Galu Devi Temple, which was about 1.5-hour walk from Mcleodganj. The trails were super smooth and non-tiring, a good warm up for the trek. The trekking began from here on, and it was one of the best trails for beginner trekkers like me. I walked for another 2-3 hours and reached the next checkpoint which was Magic View Café. The name says it all, the views were truly magical!

I then took another 2 hours to reach Triund top. The views of the snow-clad Dhauladhar ranges were mesmerising and totally worth the 6 hours of trekking. I spent the night there, atop Triund, under the starry sky. The views were as striking in the dark as it was in the light, because I could see tiny twinkling lights switching on in the small mountain towns in the distance. In my own tent, I couldn’t make myself fall asleep. My mind kept playing back the memories of the day.

Day 4: Back to Mcleodganj

The next morning, after witnessing a blissful sunrise, I descended back to Mcleodganj. I got clear views of the snow-clad serene mountains and towering pine trees. After I reached my hotel, I relaxed for a bit, changed my clothes and went to explore the market and shop for some souvenirs for my friends. I also bought myself a Tibetan silver ring as a souvenir from my very first solo trip, and I always wear it.

Day 5: Arrived in Delhi

I reached back to Delhi at 8am.
For a solo traveller like me, this was one of the safest treks and it was an experience I would remember forever.

Shewta is part of a group of friends who do a lot of adventure travel and solo travel, and she was feeling left out as she had never done either. She decided to book a solo trip to McLeodganj for trekking and here’s her experience.
