If you are a Hindu or a Buddhist, Muktinath located in the Mustang Valley of Nepal is one of the most important and sacred pilgrimage destinations for you. Rich in ancient history, this temple complex is located at the foothills of the Himalayas with a breathtaking backdrop.
The history of Muktinath
The name
Muktinath Temple was derived from Mukti, meaning Salvation and Nath, meaning the Master. Being the perfect synthesis of two words, this temple is regarded as the Moksh Peetha or Mukti chetra. According to ancient beliefs, one can attain Salvation or freedom in this temple. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the entire temple complex has a very rich historical importance.
The Pagoda style temple is also of importance to the Buddhists as it is believed to be the place of enlightenment of Lord Padmasambhava. With numerous Buddhist nuns staying and maintaining the inner sanctity of the temple complex, The Muktinath Temple is a beautiful example of the harmonious existence of multiple religions within one spot.

The holy shrine is found to have been self-created and is also one of the eight only Vishnu SHrines of the world other than Srirangam, SriMushnam, Tirupati, Naimisaranyam, Thottadri, Pushkaram, and Badrinath. Also regarded as one of the 108 Vaishnava dharma Shrines, the temple has importance in various historic events of the ancient world.
What to see in and near Muktinath Temple?
Mukti Kunda: Believed to be the only kunda where you can wash away your sins, it comprises of two holy ponds, known as Lakshmi-Saraswati Kunda.
Mukti Dhara: 108 bull head-shaped waterspouts are located in the backyard of this temple where holy water from Gandaki River flows continuously. Taking a bath under all these 108 Muktidhara is believed to bring Salvation. The water is cold, so taking a shower is a tough job.
Jwala Mai Temple: Continuously burning holy flame from a rock located inside Dhola Mebar Gompa is what makes this temple an extraordinary spiritual destination.
Mharme Lha Khang Gompa: Monastery located in the northern wing of the temple complex that is dedicated to the Buddhist Guru Padmasambhava.
Reaching Muktinath
Since Muktinath is one of the most desired pilgrimage destinations for senior citizens, there are numerous comfortable travel options available to make the journey as comfortable as viable.
By helicopter: Weekly helicopter rides are available that take 90 to 100 minutes one way from Pokhra. These 5 to 6 seater helicopter ride costs anywhere between 3500 to 5000 INR per person two ways.
By road and flight: The total time taken to reach Muktinath from Kathmandu by a combination journey of flight and car takes between 5 to 7 days in total. From Pokhara to Jomsom, one can take the mini Cessna flights which can accommodate 12 to 16 people at a time. It takes 30 minutes to reach Jomsom, from where one can take a jeep to Muktinath and reach in another 30 to 45 minutes.
However, the Jeep parking point is about 2 km away from the temple complex and needs about half an hour of an uphill trek. Those who cannot trek to the temple can always choose to take a horse ride.
How to make Muktinath Yatra comfortable for senior travelers?
1. Make sure to carry enough warm cloth to keep the cold at bay and thus stay safe.
2. Ensure to get enough rest between the stops to prevent fatigue and tiredness
3. Every medication and health guidelines as per the physician should be followed.
4. Good pairs of shoes and gloves are essential to prevent blisters, frostbites, and numbness of extremities.
5. Sufficient calorie intake to maintain the body equilibrium will ensure a healthy mind and body
6. Raincoats and umbrellas are a must to prevent falling prey to rain showers and snowfall.
7. Sipping juice and water will maintain the pH balance of the body and also keep hydration optimal.
