muktinath yatra
is perhaps among the most sacred pilgrimage tour in Nepal that is of equal importance to Hindus and Buddhists alike. The history behind this temple is quite an interesting one and often captivates the travel enthusiasts enough to want to explore it.
The history of Muktinath Temple
Located at Thorong La of Mustang District of Nepal, it is among the highest located temples of the world. Also of importance to the Buddist, this temple complex is where Guru Padmasambhava attained enlightenment during the ancient times.
How can one reach Muktinath Temple?
Muktinath ...
... Yatra is not as formidable as it once was decades ago. With many developments, courtesy of the authorities and tour operators, Muktinath can be easily reached by foot or by Helicopter.
By Helicopter (1:30hrs each way): Helicopter takes between 90 to 120 minutes one way depending on the weather. These 5 to 6 seater helicopters are only available from Kathmandu and Pokhara.
By road and flight (3-7 days): On reaching Pokhara by road, one can take a domestic flight to Jomsom. The trip takes 15 to 20 minutes one way to reach the destination. From the small airport, one needs to trek for about 30 minutes to the car station and take a Jeep to a docking station that is 30 minutes walkable distance from the Temple complex. One can either trek to the temple or opt for a horse ride.
By road only (4-8 days): One can drive from Pokhara to Jomsom via Beni, Tatopani, Ghasa, and Marpha (170 km - 9 hrs.) stay there overnight and drive to Muktinath the next morning.
Who can go to Muktinath Temple?
Muktinath Yatra is accessible for one and all unless you have severe Heart and Bone ailments. Advisable for beginners into the world of trekking, Muktinath Yatra is regarded as easy to mildly tricky in gradient.
Two permits are mandatorily required to travel to Muktinath. One is the Annapurna Conservation Area Project Permit, and another is Trekker's Information Management System Permit.
What should be the budget plan to plan Muktinath Yatra?
Planning a budget for Muktinath Yatra depends on many factors. If a combined road and air travel plan are opted for, then the cost can range between Rs. 25 to 35 thousand, which includes airfare and overnight stays at various places.
However, if a complete road trip is opted for, then, the cost is slightly reduced and can range between Rs. 20 to 30 thousand.
These rates also depend on the seasonal peak timings. February to June is regarded as the best time as it is the peak season. So, the price is often higher. The second best season is between September and November when the pricing is slightly less. Since December and January brings massive snowfall and bone-chilling temperature fall, this is regarded as the offseason. Travelling then requires a daredevil attitude though the cost is massively lesser.

Muktinath Temple has a stunningly beautiful and panoramic backdrop that will blow your mind. Rich in cultural history and ancient archaeological remnant, this temple complex is one of those rare unspoiled beauties of nature that the Himalayan range is protected by. It is a once in a lifetime worth visit that should be explored.
