Tesseract was first developed by HP and then by Google. It is free and one of the oldest optical character recognition engines.
In 1995 Tesseract was pronounced one of the top three optical character recognition engines in the Test in Accuracy by UNLV. Later, in 2005, when it had not been touched for ten years, Hewlett Packard and UNLV released the engine as an open source. Specialists from Google started reviving the old optical character recognition engine. This was a part of Google's mission to organize the information of the world. Tesserach is released under the Apache license, V. 2.0. It can process TIFF files of a single column in order to create text. Different formats can be converted to TIFF and processed with the Tesseract engine. It is now still officially one of the most accurate OCR engines.
