Are you in the process of looking for a new printer? If you are, then you know there are a whole lot of choices and options available. That is a great thing - unless you aren't sure exactly what you need. Do you need an inkjet printer or a laser printer? Would a combo printer be best for you? Making sure you get the right printer is the important thing here so let's explain the differences.

Inkjet Printers

An inkjet printer is typically the kind of printer you can fit on your desk. The ink cartridges will run you about $20-$30 each time you need a refill. These types of printers are great if you are the picture taking type as they can print out some vibrant images. As for printing out normal documents, they get a little less bang for your buck over other types of printers. These are generally the kind of printer you find in most homes.

Laser Printers

Laser printers are the printers you see in offices, stores and other businesses as they are primarily designed for printing out text documents in straight black ink. The difference here is the cost of the ink vs. the expense of printing. Laser printers ...
... use toner cartridges and while they are more expensive per cartridge, the amount of pages you can get from each purchase are about 10x the amount of pages from an inkjet cartridge. These are perfect for the home office if you need to print a lot of documents. Laser printers have become much more compact and much less expensive in recent years.

Combo Printers

A Combo printer is a printer that has multiple functions available. These may include printing, black and white and color, scanning, media readers and even a fax option. If you need something for your home office to cover all of these functions, a combo printer is the way to go. These are normally inkjet printers and they will use ink cartridge refills. You can do a variety of tasks with this type of combo printer setup and there are large varieties available from which to choose.

Regardless of what type of printer you choose, you need to factor in exactly what you will be doing with the printer. Most printers now use USB connections to communicate with your computer, so be sure you have an available port. USB connections are generally faster than the old printer port connection and are very easy to install.
