Portable Gps And Its Many Uses
By now, you have heard, or maybe own, some form of portable GPS. You may not even know you have it but you do. There are many uses for portable GPS systems from finding your way to a new location to seeing exactly where you are in a certain area and allowing other people to easily finding you. Most people who actively use portable GPS systems use them in their cars but you have GPS is more places than you realize.
GPS stands for Global Positioning Satellite. Using the many satellites we have in low earth orbit, GPS can pinpoint you location within a few feet anywhere in the world at any time. This is how GPS navigation works. A location is entered into a database, it's then synced up with maps of roads and you are easily able to find your way from point A to point B. Some cars now come with these systems built in, but for most vehicles, portable GPS systems need to be added either as an option or after the sale.
Not only are portable GPS devices used in cars but most cell phones now come with, at least, a minimal form of portable GPS. Whenever your cell phone is turned on, it can be tracked using GPS. This is commercially ...
... used in some phones so you can easily locate you kids through their phones, a boon to many concerned parents.
GPS in cell phones are also used to locate you if you call for emergency assistance. If you are stranded somewhere and don't know where you are, calling 911 will give the operator the ability to track your location via the portable GPS in the phone so they can send help your way.
Other cell phones make use of this portable GPS as a direction finder as in cars and the portable GPS units used in cars. You can use your cell phone to get directions to anywhere you are headed or to just find out where you are in an area. Some amusement parks are now adding GPS apps to help you find where you are in the park and how to the next attraction you want to visit.
GPS reports information to your phone, car or whatever portable unit you are using in longitude and latitude points. This type of grid covers the entire planet. Through the use of longitude and latitude points, any location on the planet can be identified quickly and very accurately. This is why portable GPS systems are so popular in many consumer products. As for cell phones, they all come with some form of portable GPS, but some do have more extensive features than others do.
