How Buying Your 'conflict Free Diamond' From 'my Diamonds' Is Providing Global Benefits
'Diamonds are a girl's best friend'. We all know that famous line from the song that made Marilyn Monroe a household name. And now, the mining of diamonds from conflict free zones are providing educational and health benefits to people all around the world.
Beauty and the Beast
The world's favourite gem developed underground billions of years ago. It is now mined for it's beauty and to satisfy public demand the world over. Diamonds are mined in Australia, Russia, Guinea, Canada and Brazil with 65% of the world's diamonds coming from Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Angola, Namibia, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic Of Congo, Tanzania, Botswana and South Africa. Unfortunately, in some Central and West African Countries, groups of revolutionaries have used the proceeds from diamond mines of which they have obtained control, to provide funds for their activities.
This has led to the diamonds being mined from those sites to be termed, conflict or blood diamonds.
Corporate Responsibility
The sale of diamonds from areas that had been taken over by rebels to some major ...
... corporations meant that conflict and civil wars within these territories could continue, leading to deaths and abuses of innocent people living under the revolutionaries regimes.
As public anxiety grew regarding where diamonds were being purchased and the criminal regimes the money was providing benefits for, The United Nations, the diamond industry and trading nations launched The Kimberley Process in 2002.
The subject of corporate responsibility has placed pressure on those companies that make massive profits from diamond mining to ensure that the Kimberley Process underpins all their dealings, not only with regard to revolutionaries whose wars have left over 80% of the population in poverty, but also towards those employees who work in arduous conditions within the mines and a commitment to eliminating child labour.
The Kimberley Process
The Kimberley Process insists that those countries whose economy is facilitated by the sale of diamonds from their mines, provide proof that none of the proceeds are used to financially support rebels or revolutionaries and their causes.
In 2007, 74 governments and the World Diamond Council took measures to reinforce the Kimberley Process, meaning that 99% of all diamonds are verified to be from conflict free zones.
Educational and Health Benefits from the Sale of Conflict Free Diamonds
Financial support from the diamond industry, either directly or indirectly has been instrumental in providing educational and health care benefits to an estimated 10 million people.
These benefits range from learning and job opportunities to providing funds to build schools and hospitals, and making available essential medical equipment and treatments, particularly for those infected by HIV/AIDS. The revenue from the diamond trade has enabled an estimated 5 million people to receive healthcare that would have otherwise not been available to them.
So when you're choosing your diamond from 'My Diamonds' www.mydiamonds.com.au , you can be confident that not only will your diamond be conflict free, but your investment will also be supporting communities in the countries where your beautiful diamond was formed all those billions of years ago.
